School construction on pace

Camas School District’s new Lacamas Lake Elementary school building is on track to open for the 2018-19 school year, and the district plans to repurpose the former Lacamas Heights Elementary building off Northeast Garfield Street for continued use.

Nan Henriksen, the first woman to be elected mayor of Camas in the 1980s, billed as the visionary who led the city away from a mill-based economy and into the 21st century and once named Camas' "Political Leader of the Century," will be crowned queen of the 2017 Camas Days Royal Court at a coronation event set for 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 12, at Columbia Ridge Senior Living in Washougal. Tickets are available to the public for this dessert reception and coronation, and cost $5 per person.

Nan Henriksen is sitting in a remote corner of a downtown Camas cafe, trying to look as inconspicuous as possible. But that doesn’t stop well-wishers from shouting “Hi, Nan!” to the woman who was once named Camas’ “Political Leader of the Century” as soon as they spot her.

Remembering Mrs. Champion

Hathaway Elementary School has lost a beloved teacher. Susan Champion, 59, passed away from cancer on Friday, May 9. Principal Laura Bolt describes the third-grade teacher as "vibrant and energetic," even in her final months. She was in the classroom until winter break.
