Camas focuses on second opportunity

State is not in the cards for Camas
Papermakers fall short against Yelm, in Auburn

Dealt a bad hand at the regional tournament, the Camas High School girls basketball program must reshuffle to get another crack at the state. The toughest cards to lose are seniors Caitlin Bower, Kelsi Krill and Hayley Smith.

"Those three couldn't be more different in terms of the personalities they brought to the table," said head coach Kent Thomas. "In their three years together on varsity, they have taken to program to a completely different level. To me, that's their legacy."

Thomas had a tough time holding back the tears after the Papermakers came up short in a 45-39 victory for Yelm in a loser out game Wednesday, at Auburn High School. He was not the only one.

"It hurts because we know it should be different. We shouldn't be feeling this way tonight," Thomas said. "These girls will be remembered for winning the first district championship in Camas history, and nobody can take that away from them. If we were just happy to be here, everyone wouldn't be so sad and it wouldn't feel so bad."

The Tornadoes left Camas dizzy with an 11-2 scoring drive in the first quarter. Katelyn Henson scored 8 of her 11 points in the first half, but the Papermakers trailed by 11 points at halftime.

Melissa Williams grabbed the reigns in the second half. She scored 10 points in the third quarter, and finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the game.
