With the road to state going through three qualifying meets, the Camas High School boys and girls track and field athletes got off to a good start Friday in their own backyard.
"You want to put up a good fight in these meets because league is still a big deal," said senior runner Spencer Head. "Kelso had [the district meet] last year, and they deserved it. It's sort of all worked out for us this year. We're undefeated so we deserved it."
Head and the Papermakers proved how much it meant to host the district meet. With Cardon Field packed with athletes and supporters, the Camas boys held off the Hilanders and the rest of the 3A Greater St. Helens League again. The Papermakers racked up 164 points to win the district championship. Kelso followed in second with 151 points.
Head won two individual titles, and qualified for sub-districts in all four events. He followed up a win in the 400-meter run (50.21 seconds) with a comeback victory in the 800 (2:00.72). Head also joined Robert Cramer, Mikey Lauritzen, and Chris Hayes in placing third in the 400 relay run (44.35). After closing out the 1,600 relay race with Josh Letendre, Nathan Isaacs and Shane Geiger in second (3:32.18), Head was out of breath after his busy day.
"It's tiring, but rewarding," he said. "I'm happy about the two district titles because I'm a senior and this was my last shot. I was also happy to get the team some points."
Geiger also won two events for Camas. Geiger (4:31.75) and his cross country comrades Letendre (4:31.84) and Tanner Boyd (4:32.22) took the top three spots in the mile run. An announcement that Camas was trailing Kelso by two points in the team standings gave Geiger that extra kick to win the two-mile race (9:54.24). Boyd finished fifth (10:09.22) and Nathan Madrigal followed in sixth (10:24.62).
