Applicants sought to fill Camas council seat

Applications are currently being accepted to fill the remainder of a term on the Camas City Council that will be vacant beginning Jan. 1, 2011.

Longtime Ward 1 councilwoman Helen Gerde announced her resignation during the Oct. 4 council workshop. She plans to serve through the end of 2010, although her term officially ends Dec. 31, 2011.

Applicants must be residents living within city limits for at least one year and be registered to vote. Council members are paid an annual salary of $6,000. Workshops and regular meetings are typically held on the first and third Mondays of each month, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Interested persons should fill out and return a questionnaire and background information form to City Hall by Tuesday, Nov. 30. Candidate interviews will be conducted on Dec. 21, city council will then make and confirm the appointment.

Gerde, 63, is serving her 15th year on the City Council. She said she made the decision to leave her duties as an elected official so that she can spend more time with her grandchildren.

Prior to being elected to the City Council in 1995, Gerde was a member of the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Planning Commission.
