A local nonprofit is hoping to offer parents useful tools for staying connected to their children as they transition into the teen years.

Unite Washougal Community Coalition’s, “Guiding Good Choices” is a free, five-week workshop aimed at improving family communication and preparing for middle and high school.

“These workshops are a great way to be prepared to support your child as they face the challenges of growing up,” said Margaret MaCarthy, coalition coordinator. “The skills and tools really help families successfully communicate and stay close during the transitional ‘tween’ years.”

The workshops start at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28 at Bethel Community Church, 1438 “B” St., Washougal, and include a free dinner. Childcare is available. The workshop begins at 6 p.m.

Guiding Good Choices curriculum is based on research that shows that consistent, positive parental involvement is important to helping children thrive, according to information from Unite. Topics include setting clear family expectations, avoiding trouble, managing family conflict and strengthening family bonds.

Families also receive a guide containing activities, discussion topics, skill building exercises and information on positive parenting. This workshop is recommended for parents of children in fourth through eighth grade.
