Doug Cox, Washougal School District athletic director, was recently honored as the Greater St. Helens League 2A Athletic Director of the Year.

Doug Cox was recently honored by his peers as Greater St. Helens League 2A Athletic Director of the Year.

The recognition for the Washougal School District athletic director came at the League District 4 retreat last month in Shelton.

The award recognizes Cox’s commitment to high school sports and the league, specifically his work organizing district golf and track competitions, and his service as a member of the 2A District 4 Board of Directors.

Cox has been the WSD athletic director since 2008 and coached a variety of school district athletic teams during his 34-year career in Washougal.

“It is nice to be honored.” Cox said. “But I really feel it is just my responsibly to make our facilities locally and around the league available to host and operate quality events.”

Cox’s work is respected by his colleagues.

“There is a tremendous amount of organization and work that goes into successfully managing an education-based athletic program,” said Aaron Hanson, WHS principal. “Doug continues to provide stability, leadership and support to our coaches and athletes, and I think it is great that the league has recognized his efforts.”

“I appreciate all that Doug does for the Washougal Community,” he added. “It is an honor and a privilege to work with Doug and he certainly deserves this recognition.”
