Strike ends, school begins in Washougal

Following a multi-day teachers strike, Washougal students started the new school year Friday, Sept. 7, one week and three days after their original Aug. 28 start date.

A smooth transition

UPWARD, a week-long summer camp that exposes incoming sixth-grade students to their new middle school environment has expanded to Skyridge Middle School in Camas.

Washougal reaches agreement

The strike is over in Washougal as the teachers union ratified a new two-year contract with 100 percent of members in attendance voting yes, Thursday, Sept. 6.

The first Discovery High School freshman class and families stride toward the entrance of the new high school during an orientation held Aug. 30. The project-based learning high school was not ready for a full tour during the orientation, but the underclassmen wing and common areas were ready for students on the first day. Construction crews will remain at the site during the first few weeks of school to work on the upperclassman wing of the new high school.

Camas’ newest high school, the project-based learning Discovery High, opened its doors to 115 freshmen this week.

Camas teachers dodge strike

Having reached a tentative bargaining agreement over Labor Day weekend, Camas teachers avoided a strike and greeted students on the scheduled first day of school, Tuesday, Sept. 4. The district and teachers union representatives reached a tentative agreement regarding educator salaries just two days prior, on Sunday, Sept. 2.
