Wheels turn at waterfront workshop

Some people who showed up at an open house had plenty to say regarding the revitalization of the former Hambleton Lumber Company site and additional waterfront properties. More than 50 individuals, as well as port commissioners and staff, attended the planning workshop Wednesday night.

Among the energy efficiency elements of Hayes Freedom High School is its use of solar panels. The roof is sloped to the south to take advantage of 2,500 square feet of the photovoltaic panels. The design produces 16 watts of power per square foot at peak hour, and up to 40 kilowatts of electricity, which equals 43,200 KW-hours per year, saving $3,100 in electric bills.

Hayes Freedom is named a Community Pride Design winner

Hayes Freedom High School in Camas will be among six facilities honored later this month as part of the annual Community Pride Design Awards. The projects are being recognized for their innovative approach to historic restoration, sustainability, community enhancement, public facilities and commercial development.

Washougal budget adds new police officer

The hiring of a new officer for the Washougal Police Department is expected to reduce the number of calls that each officer responds to. So far this year, there have been 16,545 calls. With 18 officers, that averages out to be 919 calls per officer, per year.

Mitch Hammontree, owner of Quiznos, at The Crossing, in Washougal, enjoys talking with crews from Tapani Underground, Inc. Despite support from many of the Tapani employees, Hammontree said his business has experienced a 50 percent decline in sales since the state Route 14 improvements project started earlier this year.

Constructing cooperation

Kurt Cichosz, a foreman with Tapani Underground Inc., has eaten at Quiznos, in Washougal, five days a week, for four months. As one of the road construction crew members working on the state Route 14 improvements project, Cichosz estimates he has spent more than $1,000 on a variety of sandwiches, sodas, chips and cookies at the local Quiznos.

The impacts of coal export trains traveling through local communities will be the topic of discussion during an upcoming forum. The "Power Past Coal Coalition," is presenting the event today, at 7 p.m., at First Congregational Church in Vancouver.

Members of the Camas and Washougal fire departments added a touch of pink to their uniforms recently in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Jonathon Huckvale, a 2003 Camas High School graduate, recently earned a bachelor's degree in marketing communications from Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah. In addition to being in the top 10 percent of his college class, he was accepted into the Golden Key International Honor Society. Huckvale and his wife Nancy have returned to live in Camas. He wants to encourage local youth to persevere through challenges. Huckvale's life experiences have included overcoming poor grades and an SUV accident in high school.

Excellence through adversity

A Camas man who experienced several challenges while in high school would like local students to know there is hope for them to succeed in life. Jonathon Huckvale, a 2003 Camas High School graduate, recently earned a bachelor's degree in marketing communications from Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah. In addition to being in the top 10 percent of his class, he was accepted into the Golden Key International Honor Society. Huckvale was recruited and hired by Sentry Insurance, where he is involved in commercial business insurance, in the Portland and Vancouver areas. He recently took the Graduate Management Admission Test, and he plans to pursue a master's in business administration. Huckvale has already been accepted to the University of Southern California and Marylhurst University. He has not yet made a decision, as he awaits replies from other schools.

CFD firefighter eyes ECFR seat

A career Camas firefighter is challenging incumbent John Clancy for East County Fire & Rescue Commission Position 4. "I've been with the fire service for 27 years and want to continue doing that," said Brooks Cooper. "With my experience as a firefighter, I'll make a great commissioner." Clancy, who has been on the commission seven years, enjoys his job and wants to continue. "I like doing what I am doing and feel like I'm contributing to the community."
