One of the Washougal City councilors who missed the discussion last week regarding potential appointments to an ethics committee made his feelings known during last night's workshop. Dave Shoemaker said the council does not need an ethics committee.
A sport that combines the skills of pingpong, badminton, tennis and racquetball is gaining momentum throughout Clark County, and a local couple is doing their part to promote it within the Camas-Washougal area. Mike and Tawn Wolfe, both 65, have played pickleball for two years. As voluntary co-ambassadors, they play in tournaments together and write a monthly newsletter about the sport.
No arrests have been made in connection with an armed robbery that took place at the U.S. Bank in downtown Camas on Wednesday evening, an FBI offical said this morning. According to Federal Bureau of Investigation public information officer Fred Gutt, at approximately 6:15 p.m. a man who was observed with a small handgun demanded money from a teller at the bank located at 430 N.E. Adams St. The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect is described as a white male, 35 to 45 years old, approximately 5 feet, 7 inches tall.

The Washougal City Council issued a vote of confidence for local C-TRAN board member Linda Dietzman during a meeting last night, while the Camas City Council expressed a general consensus that the current bus service should be preserved. The Camas discussions occurred during a workshop, so no vote was taken. The talks affirmed that the two-tenths of a percent sales tax increase should be on the November ballot.
The Washougal School District Board of Directors has selected Corvallis School District Superintendent Dawn Tarzian as its next superintendent. Tarzian will begin work July 1, succeeding Teresa Baldwin, who retires in June. She was one of four finalists and has served as superintendent of the Corvallis School District in Corvallis, Ore., since 2005. Prior to that, she served as assistant superintendent and director of teaching and learning for the school district. Prior to becoming an administrator in Corvallis, Tarzian served as director of student services for Linn Benton Lincoln Education Service District, principal for the Greater Albany School District in Albany, Ore., and principal in the Falls City School District in Falls City, Ore.
The Camas City Council last night approved the final two employee union contracts, putting to bed the negotiation efforts that will have an impact on the 2011 budget. Agreements were reached with the Camas Police Officers' Association and the Camas Public Employees' Association, and both have been ratified by the members of both entities. The one-year contract with the CPOA, which impacts 25 city employees, includes no pay increase. However, vacation accruals will increase from 10, 13, 15 and 18 hours per month, to 12, 14, 16 and 20 hours per month, depending on the number of years an employee has worked for the city. In addition, sick leave accrual will increase from 8 to 10 hours per month.
Washougal City Councilmen Michael Delavar and Jon Russell quietly left the council chambers at City Hall last night, after disagreeing with the attempt to name members to a council ethics committee. Their departure resulted in there being a lack of a quorum for the meeting to continue. Mayor Sean Guard and council members Molly Coston, Paul Greenlee and Rod Morris remained. Dave Shoemaker and Jennifer McDaniel had excused absences.
A Camas man who was born in Hollywood and has co-owned three restaurants recently got to play a chef on TV. Jack Foyte and his wife Chris, owners of The Fairgate Inn, welcomed the cast and crew of "Leverage," a Turner Network Television series. Filming was done from March 15 to 18. "Security was on site from the moment they began working on the inn," Chris said. "When they began loading their equipment on site, they told us that there was a million and a half dollars worth of camera equipment alone." There were also security measures in place to screen all incoming vehicles.
Volunteers are currently being recruited to help during the annual Dozer Days fundraiser. The two-day event will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22, at the Fisher Quarry off of Highway 14 at 192nd Avenue near Camas. Activities put kids close to ? actually on and operating ? dump trucks, dozers and excavators. There is also music, food, giveaways, and other activities for the entire family.
