Several wards of the Latter-day Saints church are spearheading local service projects, and the greater community -- including service groups, churches and families -- are being invited to lend a hand.
When Marquita Call, co-owner of Ballard & Call in Camas, answered her phone and heard the man on the other end identify himself as Jimmie Rodgers, she was beside herself with excitement. "No! Get out of town! Are you for real?" she said to him. "I just can't believe this is happening."

The Camas City Council received its first progress report on the trial consolidation effort underway between the Camas and Washougal fire departments, and so far the results are positive. During last Tuesday's workshop, Camas Fire Chief Nick Swinhart and Washougal Fire Chief Ron Schumacher said relationships are being built, and some savings are being recorded. While the inter-local agreement was initiated July 13, the trial consolidation process officially began Aug. 20, which marked the point at which the IV technician hired by the Washougal Fire Department was fully trained. Schumacher commented that the effort is moving ahead surprisingly well.
Dianne Morgan is so dedicated to Camas Library patrons that even a wardrobe malfunction couldn't keep her from doing her job. "Dianne was walking away from the circulation desk with a patron when her slip fell down around her ankles," co-worker Debbie Chevron recalled. "Dianne, being the professional she is, reached down to pick up her slip, put it in her pocket and kept on walking." Morgan, 60, will be retiring at the end of September after 30 years at the library. It's been a storied career for someone who felt totally overwhelmed at the beginning. "The first day, I was told to sort the books by author, title and subject, and some of the subjects I'd never even heard of before," Morgan said. "I was sure they were going to figure out I was some kind of fraud."
The pre-trial hearing for Washougal Mayor Sean Guard has been continued to Thursday, Oct. 6, in Cowlitz County District Court.

As the youngest of 10 siblings in a musical family, Mary LaFrance grew up surrounded by melodies. She began singing when she was 4, and performing with her family in church when she was 5. "It's been a huge chunk of my life," she said. On Saturday, LaFrance will perform her first solo concert at Bethel Community Church, 1438 "B" St., in Washougal. The concert, which begins at 6 p.m., is free. Donations are being accepted to help LaFrance pay for musical expenses and help the church purchase new sound equipment.
