CEF approves major grant

The Camas Education Foundation is providing a $10,000 grant to expand the Camas School District’s elementary schools coding and robotics program.

As a result of this grant, Helen Baller and Woodburn Elementary schools will offer a pilot coding program to all third- and fourth-graders during the 2016-17 school year.

Based on the results, the program could be expanded across the district in future years.

This is an additional program to the current Lego Robotics programs in second- and fifth-grade.

United Methodist Church will host summer musical camp

Camas United Methodist Church is hosting a summer musical drama camp from Wednesday through Sunday, Aug. 10 to 14.

Free gardening workshops begin

The Master Gardener Program at Washington State University Extension is hosting free workshops at the Helen Baller Elementary School garden this summer.

Participants are asked to spend one hour helping to maintain the school garden, and bring water for drinking and gloves if they have them, for two hours.

“Our Watershed,” will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 27.

They will learn what a watershed is and what to do to care for streams and rivers. Children will create their own watershed model and experiment with what happens when it rains.

“Easy to Grow Herbs,” will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17. Participants will go home with a small herb container.

Camas student named to dean’s list

Xinyang Chen of Camas, WA, made the Dean’s List for the Spring 2016 semester at the Georgia Institute of Technology. This designation is awarded to undergraduate students who have a 3.0 or higher academic average for the semester.

More than 24,000 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled at Georgia Tech. It is ranked in the nation’s top 10 public universities by U.S. News and World Report. For more information visit www.gatech.edu.

Free child health screenings set

On Kids’ Day, Tuesday, Aug. 2, Harley Youngblood will be scanning children from birth to age 14 to evaluate their level of health at Family Chiropractic at Salmon Creek.

Participants should bring a donation of clothes or toys for ARC of Southwest Washington.
