The popular Movies in the Park, hosted by the city of Camas’ Parks and Recreation Department, is back for its 13th year with free showings taking place every Friday night in August.

The annual outdoor movies begin at dusk in Crown Park, at Northeast Everett Street and Northeast 17th Avenue in Camas, and are free and family friendly, with movies rated “G” or “PG.”

The next movie, “How to Train Your Dragon,” will begin at 8:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 9. Other movies include “Jumanji” at 8:30 p.m., Aug. 16; “The Lego Movie, the Second Part” at 8:15 p.m., Aug. 23; and “Spider-man into the Spider-verse” at 8 p.m., Aug. 30.

Pre-movie activities, including crafts and games, will take place one hour prior to the start of the movie.

At the beginning of each year, selected K-8 classrooms in the Camas School District get to cast their vote for their favorite movies. The winning movies are slotted in each of the Fridays in August.

“This has been the best way to get some of our students engaged in the movies and to show movies to our community that are trending as the most popular to view,” said Krista Bashaw, special events coordinator for the city of Camas.

Camas United Methodist Church and Unitus Community Credit Union sponsor the annual Movies in the Park events.

Attendees are welcome to bring dinner or snacks, but also can purchase novelty treats such as cotton candy at the event. Attendees should plan to bring chairs or blankets for seating and should note that, to allow fair viewing, chairs are placed in one-half of the park viewing area and blankets in the other half.

Family Fun Fridays returns

The city of Camas’ Parks and Recreation Department also recently kicked off its “Family Fun Fridays” events at Crown Park.

These popular lunchtime family events, which include free, child-friendly activities, are scheduled to run from noon to 1 p.m., every Friday throughout the month of August. The following is a list of upcoming Family Fun Friday events:

Aug. 9: “Circus Skills with Shireen” will teach children how to spin plates, juggle balls, walk on stilts and learn to hula hoop.

Aug. 16: “Dog Days of Summer” brings local K9 units to the park to demonstrate just how smart these working dogs (and their humans) really are.

Aug. 23: “Dragon Theatre Puppets” will entertain families with a puppet show about a villain known as “The Bad Idea,” who wants to steal everyone else’s ideas and only teamwork can stop him.

Aug. 30: “Oregon Reptile Man” will be on hand to show off some wonderful critters, including a frilled lizard, gila monster, tortoise and rattlesnake.

Movies in the Park and Family Fun Fridays are free events and no registration is required.

Alcohol and animals are not allowed in Crown Park.
