WSD to host discussion about dual-credit programs

The Washougal School District (WSD) will hold an informational session for students and parents interested in learning about the district’s dual credit opportunities at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, in Washougal High School’s Excelsior Building commons area.

District officials will discuss their Advanced Placement, College in the High School and Running Start programs, among others.

“We will be covering all the different opportunities and answering questions regarding the many ways students can earn college credit while in high school,” according to the WSD website.

New fencing classes offered in Camas

Camas Parks and Recreation’s winter community education classes will offer a new session of fencing, starting in February.

Victoria Fencing Program will teach students the skills of attacking and defending with a fencing weapon called a “foil.” Fencers develop good coordination, balance, flexibility and self-discipline, which makes this training a good way of keeping fit for all ages and abilities. The training progression starts with teaching the students footwork and basic fencing moments. Once the student develops a general understanding of these movements, the student is taught a series of fencing drills combined with open fencing with other students to apply the lessons learned. The final stage consists of teaching tactics and strategy for set competitive situations.

All the equipment for the introductory classes is included in the fee. The cost of the class is $80 per month for weekly classes or $140 per month for twice-weekly classes. There is a one-time registration fee of $10 to cover insurance costs. The course will be offered to students ages 6 to 14, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, at Lacamas Lake Lodge, 227 N.W. Lake Road, Camas.
