Cape Horn-Skye names Super Citizens

Cape Horn-Skye elementary school has named its Super Citizens for January. They include:

Callison makes dean’s list

Carissa Callison of Washougal has earned fall quarter dean’s list honors at the University of Montana Western.

To be named to the dean’s list, students must earn at least a 3.33 GPA.

Journey Theater Arts Group presents ‘Annie Warbucks’

“Annie Warbucks,” the sequel to the international smash hit “Annie,” will open at the Washburn Performing Arts Center Friday, Feb. 22. The drama unfolds when child welfare commissioner Harriet Doyle arrives on the scene to inform Daddy Warbucks he must marry in 60 days so the newly adopted Annie can have a proper mother. In the end, Daddy Warbucks’ whirlwind search for a fitting bride uncovers not only a plot by Doyle and her daughter to strip him of his fortune, but also his true feelings for Grace Farrell.

Performances will run from Feb. 22 to March 3. Show times are Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22 and 23 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, March 2 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Feb. 24 and March 3 at 2 p.m.

Pre-sale tickets are $12 for adults, and $9 for youth, senior citizens and groups. All tickets for the Saturday, Feb. 23 performance are $9. All tickets $2 more at the door. Special performances for school groups on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 9:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. To reserve seats for your classroom or home school group, call 750-8550.WHS Grad Night hosts spaghetti feed SaturdayWashougal High School Grad Night 2013 will host a “Sweethearts Pasta Dinner” and gift basket raffle/silent auction on Saturday, in conjunction with the WHS Drama production of “Alice vs. Wonderland.” Dinner will be served from 5 to 8:30 p.m. in the commons, 1201 39th St., and includes pasta, bread, salad, dessert and beverages for $5 a person, or $20 for a family of five.

Gift baskets will be raffled, and the silent auction includes a two-night stay at a beach house, a $400 Nautilus bike, a driver’s education course, and 10 prime seats at graduation.

Grad Night is the all-night drug and alcohol free party for high school seniors, following the graduation ceremony.

WSU hosts Preview Day

Washington State University Vancouver, 14204 N.E. Salmon Creek Ave., will host Preview Day from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7 in the Dengerink Administration building, room 110.

The event will allow prospective students to learn about the campus, the programs, student life, admissions, financial aid and more. An optional campus tour will begin at 4:30 p.m.

“Preview Day is an opportunity for prospective freshmen and transfer students to learn the ropes of college from admissions to paying for school,” said Kimberly Hiatt, WSU Vancouver associate director of admissions.

Preview Day will provide a campus overview, offer a comprehensive look at admissions requirements and reveal the steps necessary to apply. Representatives from student organizations will share information about recreational and co-curricular activities, and student ambassadors will offer insight into campus life, academics and student support services. Members of WSU Vancouver’s staff and faculty will be on hand to answer questions.

Preview Day will also allow participants to learn the ins and outs of financing a college education. An A-Z financial aid and scholarships workshop will cover options for paying for college including loans, grants, waivers and scholarships. Financial aid experts will be on hand to answer individual questions.

Camas Mechanikids fare well at league championships

The Camas Mechanikids came home victorious from the 12th annual Intel Oregon FIRST LEGO League Championship Tournament last month.

This event, held on Jan. 19 and 20 at Liberty High School in Hillsboro, Ore., brought together 117 teams from across Oregon and the region who have excelled in the program, which helps young students explore technical fields and careers at an early age.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an organization whose mission is to “inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication and leadership.”

FIRST runs multiple robotics competitions, among them FIRST LEGO League for elementary and middle school students. This gives them the chance to gain real-world engineering experience, including brainstorming, following a plan, and efficiency in both the construction and software of the robot, according to organizers.

The Mechanikids received second-place in the Vernier Software Technology Strategy and Innovation Award.

Team members include Tate Perry, Jordan Hendricks, Caleb Young, Aria Perry, Luke Miller and Ethan Tobey.
