Excelsior names first student of the month Excelsior High School, the Washougal School District’s alternative school, has just launched a student of the month program called “Phoenix on Fire.” Students of the month exemplify the characteristics staff would like to see all Excelsior students achieve, according to a press release. “Excelsior students are striving to become: inspiring, responsible, and respectful, and to have great attendance, an excellent work ethic, and a positive attitude,” the release stated. February’s Phoenix of the month is Randee Schneider. Play auditions coming soon for Hathaway students An audition will be held for the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) production of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” on Monday, March 11, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Hathaway Elementary School gym. Permission slips will be sent home on Monday, March 4. Those auditioning should arrive at 3:25 and plan to stay for the full two hours. Some of the cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the audition. Among the roles to be cast are Snow White, Queen, seven Dwarfs, Forest Friends, Black Forest Creatures, a Magic Mirror, Bats, Henchmen and the King. All students are encouraged to audition and no advance preparation is necessary. Assistant directors will also be cast to aid in rehearsals throughout the week, and to take on essential backstage responsibilities. The Missoula Children’s Theatre touring productions are complete with costumes, scenery, props and makeup. MCT tour actor/directors will conduct rehearsals throughout the week from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. each day. “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” will be presented on Saturday, March 16, at the Washburn Performing Arts Center at Washougal High School, 1201 39th St., at 3 and 7 p.m. For more information, call the Hathaway school office at 954-3800. Library to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday The Camas Public Library will host a birthday party for Dr. Seuss on Monday, March 4 from 4 to 5 p.m. It is for children in kindergarten through second-grade and includes crafts and cake. The library is located at 625 N.E. Fourth Ave. Brotherton named to dean’s list at Bentley Hannah Brotherton of Washougal has been named to the dean’s list at Bentley University in Waltham, Mass. To be named to the list, students must have a GPA of at least 3.7 with no course grade below 3.0 during the term. Chamber scholarship applications available The Camas-Washougal Chamber of Commerce is offering two scholarships to high school seniors, for $1,000 each. One will be given to a Washougal High School graduate, and the other to a Camas High School graduate. The scholarships will be given to graduating seniors who plan to attend college. The application deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, April 5. Applications can be delivered to the chamber office, 422 N.E. Fourth Ave., Camas. Book drive will benefit Crestline Elementary, homeless Michelle Gemmer, a Camas High School senior, is hosting a book drive for her senior project. It will benefit both the Women and Children Vancouver Share Shelter and Crestline Elementary School. Collection boxes for the books are at Camas High School, 26900 S.E. 15th St.; the Camas Public Library, 625 N.E. Fourth Ave.; Liberty Middle School, 1612 N.E. Garfield St.; and Dorothy Fox Elementary, 2623 N.W. Sierra St., through the end of the month. New and gently used children’s and young adult books are requested. Student makes dean’s list Kathryn Norcross of Washougal was named to the dean’s list at the University of Montana in Missoula. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn at least a 3.5 GPA and receive grades of A or B in at least nine credits. Norcross is a 2010 graduate of Camas High School. Sorensen named to EOU dean’s list Stefani Sorensen of Camas has been named to the dean’s list at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande. To be named to the list, students must earn at least a 3.5 GPA and complete at least 12 graded credits.
