School notes for Aug. 19, 2014

WSU grads earn achievement scholarships Sisters Kaitlyn and Kari Johnson, of Washougal, have been awarded Transfer Achievement Scholarships of $3,000 each for the 2014-15 academic year at Eastern Washington University. The scholarship is awarded to an incoming transfer student. At EWU, Kaitlyn will major in environmental science with an emphasis in biology and Kari will major in nursing. Kaitlyn and Kari are 2013 Washougal High School graduates. While at WHS, they competed in track and field, cross country and basketball, and were members of the National Honor Society. They are the daughters of Eldon and Laurie Johnson of Washougal. Therapeutic Associates offers free backpack fitting night Therapeutic Associates Physical Therapy of Camas is hosting a free back pack fitting night for youth from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28 at 3180 N.E. Third Ave. According to a press release from the clinic, backpacks can lead to injuries if too heavy or fitted incorrectly. Physical therapists will conduct the fitting, which includes education on proper backpack usage, adjustments to current fit and a back-to-school goodie bag. The event is open to the community. No RSVP is required. Washougal resident earns bachelor's degree Michelle M. Magana of Washougal graduated on June 14 with a bachelor's degree in Latin American and Caribbean studies from the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington in Seattle. Magana was a 2010 graduate of Washougal High School and is planning to travel to Columbia early in 2015 for a year to teach English. District plans school facilities and safety forum The Washougal School District is hosting a school safety and facilities planning forum from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25 at the district office, 4855 Evergreen Way. Attendees will learn more about district facility needs, student safety and capacity, as well as give input if desired. During the 2013-14 school year, a Long Range Facility Planning Committee evaluated the needs and conditions of school district facilities and prepare recommendations to ensure that school facilities, "support a positive environment for student learning and success," according to a press release. The committee identified several priorities for the district, including improving school safety and security and planning for the future. Local SPU students graduate The following Camas students recently graduated from Seattle Pacific University. Natalie Skye Longley earned a Bachelor of Science in applied human biology. Rachel Elizabeth Stenberg graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. Screen Reads are coming to the library Camas Public Library presents Screen Reads, Saturday, Sept. 27, from 2 to 5 p.m. The movie adaptation of "Howl's Moving Castle," by Diana Wynne Jones will be shown and discussed in comparison to the book. Light snacks will be served. Attendees must be 18 years or older. Camas Public Library is located at 625 N.E. Fourth Ave. To sign up, call 834-4692.
