‘Musical Comedy Murders of 1940,’ continues this weekend at CHS

CHS drama students will perform the “Musical Comedy Murders of 1940,” this weekend.

Showtimes are 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20 and Saturday, Nov. 21.

Ticket sales begin one hour before show time. The cost is $7 for general admission, and $5 for students with ASB cards and senior citizens.

The plot involves a creative team responsible for a recent Broadway flop (in which three chorus girls were murdered by the mysterious “Stage Door Slasher”) who assemble for a backer’s audition of their new show at the Westchester estate of a wealthy “angel.”

The house is replete with sliding panels, secret passageways and a German maid who is apparently four different people–all of which figure in the mayhem which follows when the infamous “Slasher” makes his reappearance and strikes again.

The CHS theater is located at 26900 S.E. 15th St.

Local high school students Trick or Treat for Disaster Services

Halloween brought heavy rains and wind to Clark County. However, the bad weather didn’t stop local youth volunteers from going door-to-door in their neighborhoods to solicit cash donations for Southwest Washington Disaster Services.

Red Cross club members represented high schools including Fort Vancouver, Union, Columbia River, Camas, Mountain View and Skyview, as well as the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics.

Participating Camas High School students were Ashlyn Campbell, Monica Chang, Siobhan Choong, Daniel Fan, Sophia Hansen, Abigail Jiang, Yeh Seo Jung, Maia Kawamura, Jason Kim, Fan Liu, Christianna Martin, Katja Miller, Samuel Quinn, Kamryn Schroeder, Chemay Shola, Yoonseo Song, Calvin Taylor, Ashley Teng, Noah Thompson, Lauryn Tsukimura and Duy Vuong.

The Red Cross Youth Clubs collected more than $3,200 during the effort. Funds aid in providing Red Cross disaster responses in local communities, for victims of fire, flood, and other local emergencies, helping to provide for temporary housing, food, clothing, counseling and other disaster recovery assistance.

Since July, Southwest Washington American Red Cross volunteers have responded 36 times, assisting 69 families, 172 people and 29 pets.

Congressional App Challenge opens

Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler today extended an invitation to high school students across Southwest Washington to participate in the 2015 Congressional App Challenge.

The Congressional App Challenge is open to all high school students in ninth through 12th grade, who either reside or attend school in Southwest Washington’s Third Congressional District.

Student submissions will be evaluated by a panel of judges within the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields, appointed by Herrera Beutler.

The winner of the competition will have their app showcased at www.house.gov, along with winners from each congressional district.

“It’s my hope that by participating in Congressional App Challenge, this region’s students, tomorrow’s business leaders, will sharpen their ability to apply creativity and innovation within the critical fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” said Herrera Beutler. “As we look to the future, STEM skills will continue to be necessary skills in the workforce. I hope this challenge will inspire and open doors for students to consider careers in the STEM fields.”

Students entering the competition must submit their app’s source code online by Jan. 15 at 9 p.m., as well as provide a YouTube video explaining their app and what they learned through the process.

For complete details and guidelines, call 695-6292 or visit http://herrerabeutler.house.gov/assistingyou/high-school-stem-competition.htm.
