Primary election politics can have significant impacts

Primary elections are funny creatures. They can take on many different meanings. For candidates who win the primary, they point to the results and declare themselves on a roll and deserving of support. Politicos study the results much like they do polling data. This helps them determine who should be considered for general election support both financially and otherwise.

Lacamas Valley Sheep Dog Trial will start Thursday in Camas

The Lacamas Valley Sheep Dog Trial will, for the eighth year in a row, be returning to Johnston Dairy Farm in Camas Thursday through Sunday. An estimated 1,000 spectators came out to support and enjoy the competition last year, and this year is not expected to be any different.

Washougal fighters go for titles

Two Full-Contact Federation fighters from Washougal will challenge for championship belts on Saturday, Aug. 25, at Rumble at the Roseland 65, inside the Roseland Theater in Portland, Ore. The 24-match card begins at 7 p.m. The main event features a 125-pound female championship fight between challenger Emily Whitmore of Washougal and champion Emily Corso. Corsco is a well-rounded fighter, with wins by knockdown and submission in her last four matches. Whitmore earned her first title shot at Rumble at the Roseland 54 in January 2011, but she came up short against Robin Woods. Whitmore has been fighting to get back in contention ever since. She has earned it with victories against Kimberley Picard, Janna Piper, Rachel Morton and Cinthia Aguirre over the past two years. "Emily Whitmore has great Jiu Jitsu skills on the ground. She is very technical," said Kevin Keeney, FCFF co-owner and match maker.

The festival volunteers got creative in their scavenger hunt, "yarn bombing" all over downtown, including the bronze statue located at the fountain at Northeast Fourth Avenue and Cedar Street.

Quilt and Fiber Arts Festival returns to downtown Camas

People of all ages flocked to the festive downtown area on Friday and Saturday. And it was the power of quilts and fiber arts that drew them in.The Downtown Camas Association's second annual Quilt and Fiber Arts Festival offered participants a wide range of classes, demonstrations and a number of quilts and fiber arts to view, purchase and vote on for the People's Choice award. New quilters and professionals alike showed up.

School District preschool has openings The Washougal School District Preschool has openings for the 2012-13 school year. Preschools are located at each elementary school: Cape Horn-Skye, Gause and Hathaway. Children ages 3 to 5 years can attend sessions two or four days per week.

Land being decimated by clear-cutting I had never been to the Northwest until I moved here 12 years ago. I knew it rained but I also knew it to be a very beautiful place and assumed we would buy a house on a decent-sized lot, with decent-sized trees, and that our windows would be a decent distance from our neighbor's windows. What a naive assumption.
