City of Camas will throw ‘going away party’ for pool

Camas Parks and Recreation Department is throwing a going away party for the city’s beloved, 65-year-old swimming pool, which closed in 2018, after city officials deemed the pool’s upkeep costs too expensive to maintain in the long-term.

Displaced mill workers to get federal retraining benefits

Nine months after the beginning of a staggered layoff affecting nearly 250 employees at the Georgia-Pacific paper mill in Camas, laid-off workers have received some good news — the United States Department of Labor (DOL) Office of Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) has certified the entire mill site, meaning displaced workers are now eligible to receive federal assistance for retraining and get extended unemployment and health insurance benefits.

Burton appointed to Camas council

Ellen Burton, a 20-year Camas resident with extensive business experience and letters of recommendation from two prominent Camas leaders, is the newest member of the Camas City Council.

The Camas School District will host a dedication ceremony for the new Northwest Nan Henriksen Way -- a road leading to the former Sharp Electronics campus and current home of Camas' two project-based learning schools, Odyssey Middle School and Discovery High School -- at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24. Three groups of Discovery High freshmen from Camas recently competed with young innovators from Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington for cash prizes and the quest to solve one incredibly important problem — a lack of food for the world’s population by 2050.
