On the Sidelines: Historic football season in Camas ended too soon

Well …

That was one of the best high school football games I have ever seen. It’s just too bad Camas couldn’t get that last stop. That would have really been something.

Down by three points, Lakes faced a fourth-and-five in overtime and needed to score on this last play. Instead of playing safe with a field goal, the Lancers went for broke. The running back saw day light down the right sidelines. Three Papermakers dove in desperation, but the runner was out of their reach and into the end zone to lead Lakes to a 27-24 victory Friday, at Doc Harris Stadium.

Camas was so close to a trip to the Tacoma Dome. Everybody could taste it. It was tough for the players, students, parents and coaches to hold back tears.

It stings now, but these Papermakers go down in history as the first Camas High School football team to win a state playoff game and reach the quarterfinals. So many people in this town are proud of them, and will never forget being along for the ride.

Read more about the reactions of the Camas football players and coaches in Tuesday’s Post-Record, and feel free to share your favorite memories of this season. There are so many of them.

Thanks for a great fall season Camas and Washougal. Time to go indoors.

See you on the sidelines.
