"Watch Where You're Walking Sticks," created by Camas resident Blythe Ayne, will be among the artwork on display during the upcoming Winter Art Show in downtown Camas. The show is being held Friday, with pieces on display in various local businesses as part of the monthly First Friday events.

A new year is being welcomed with a juried art exhibit Friday, in downtown Camas.

The theme of the Camas Winter Art Show is “Celebrate Camas,” and includes works that highlight the City’s natural setting, rich history and interesting architecture.

As part of the First Friday event, downtown merchants will showcase the talents of local artists from 5 to 8 p.m., and the artists will be on hand to discuss their work and their inspiration.

“This is a great opportunity to celebrate what makes Camas so unique while highlighting all the local talent we have in the area,” said Downtown Camas Association Vice President Carrie Schulstad. “I can see no better way to start a new year in Downtown Camas.”

The Camas Winter Art Show will feature guest judges and offer the community a chance to vote for their favorite works. Vote at any participating merchant and be entered to win gifts from local merchants.

Subjects for the Camas Winter Art Show will include local nature, the gorge and the Cascade Mountains, historic downtown Camas, Camas lilies, agriculture, wildlife, Native American culture, and a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities.

“It’s so great for local artists to have a place to show their work,” said Schulstad, who added that so far 11 artists have submitted 25 works that will be on display throughout the downtown area until Jan. 31.

“It’s a very nice smattering of all different kinds of art,” she said. “I’m really excited about it. It’s going to be a good event.”

First Friday events, each with a special theme, happen every month of the year. Local merchants keep their doors open late and often welcome shoppers with special offers.

The Downtown Camas Association is a non-profit organization that promotes the revitalization of Downtown Camas through community building, economic development, beautification and community events.
