A Camas man was killed Saturday after being injured in a bicycling accident near Grand Ronde, Ore.
According to Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Bridget Taylor, at approximately 2:25 p.m. on Highway 18 near milepost 24, Steven Dayley of Camas was riding a bicycle travelling westbound on the shoulder of the highway in a congested area. A westbound 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche pickup, driven by Fred M. Moore III, 24, of Battle Ground, veered right to avoid traffic and struck Dayley.
Dayley was critically injured and was transported by ambulance to Salem Memorial Hospital, where he later died. Moore was not injured.
A funeral for Dayley is planned for Monday, May 28, at 10 a.m., at the Latter-day Saints Vancouver East Stake Center, 18300 N.E. 18th St.
Dayley, 65, described as an avid cyclist, had joined other cyclists who were part of the “Reach the Beach” charity bicycle ride, although he was not an official entrant. The event started in four different Willamette Valley locations and ended in Pacific City.
