On Monday, Washington State Department of Transportation contractor Tapani Underground Inc. began pavement grinding to prepare state Route 14 in Camas and Washougal for its final layer of asphalt.
“Final paving is very weather-dependent, but grinding can be done in pretty much any weather,” said WSDOT Project Engineer Chris Tams. “Getting the grinding done up front means we can be ready to take advantage of every warm, dry day that comes along and get a good-quality layer of asphalt.”
To ensure pavement quality and longevity, the road surface must be dry and the air temperature at 45 degrees and rising.
According to WSDOT, until the weather cooperates, drivers will have a bumpy ride as they travel over ground out asphalt and dozens of joints where new pavement will tie into ramps, bridges and the existing roadway.
Drivers can expect minor delays during grinding work, and rough patches of roadway on SR-14 from Sixth Street in Camas to Sixth Avenue in Washougal.
