Four-year-old raising money for Oklahoma

The granddaughter of Camas School District transportation department manager Laura Nowland is accepting money and donations for those impacted by the deadly tornado in Oklahoma.

Audrey Rose Linn, 4, was watching the news with her mother, Amanda, and was sad to see people who had lost everything.

“I decided that I wanted to send them my toys, clothes and money,” she said.

To donate, contact Amanda Linn at 921-9425 or e-mail mandeelinn18@hotmail.com. All donations will be sent to the American Red Cross in Oklahoma. Shipping and handling costs for the donations will be paid for by Audrey’s family.

Locals honored for math, science and technology

The Hudson Bay Branch of the American Association of University Women recently honored 51 high school young women, who were chosen by their schools for excellence in mathematics, science and technology in the Greater Southwest Washington area.

Each student received a certificate during a reception at the Firstenburg Student Commons at Washington State University.

Local honorees are Sydney Hickey (math), Hanna Wright (science), and Makayla Jacobs (technology), Washougal High School; Rachel Graham (math) and Emily Quist (science), Excelsior High School; and Phoebe Nicole Jud (math) and Sydney Ellen Fredrickson (science), Hayes Freedom High School.

WHS student wins exchange scholarship

Madeline Ivy Braun of Washougal has been awarded a Congress-Bundestag scholarship for the 2013-14 academic year. She joins a group of 50 American high school students sponsored by ASSE International Student Exchange Programs who will live with a host family and attend high school in Germany for one academic year.

Braun will experience German life firsthand. She will live with a carefully selected host family while becoming a member of her German host community, attending school, participating in community life, and learning about another country and culture.

Since 1983, the United States Department of State and the German government have co-sponsored the scholarship program.

Japanese Club hosts book night

On Thursday, June 6, the Washougal High School Japanese Club is hosting a multi-cultural book night at WHS, room 318. It runs from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Students will host this book night and share their reading experiences on Manga comic books. There will be free Japanese green tea ice cream served.

Fifth-grader fares well at math contest

Jordan Chase, a fifth-grader from Grass Valley Elementary, took third-place in a statewide math contest.

The Math is Cool competition took place last month in Moses Lake, Wash., where hundreds of fifth-graders from all over the state participated.

Chase is part of a school math team coached by Grass Valley teacher Jackie Graue.

McCaughan makes dean’s list

Loryn McCaughan, a senior interiors merchandising major from Camas, was among more than 1,000 Harding University students included on the spring semester dean’s list.

To be eligible, a student must take at least 12 credit hours and maintain a 3.65 or higher GPA.
