Great ShakeOut set Thursday at schools

At 10:17 a.m. on Thursday, students at Camas and Washougal schools will participate in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drills.

With millions of participants, it is the world’s largest earthquake drill.

The event has been held since 2008, to help students practice earthquake readiness, and is held on the third Thursday in October every year.

Community health fair set at JMS Saturday

There will be a “Healthy Me” community health fair at the Jemtegaard Middle School gym, 35300 S.E. Evergreen Way, Washougal, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19.

It will include food, entertainment, prizes, a kids’ obstacle course, Zumba, a bounce house, free massages, a balloon artist, interactive booths, and more.

Admission is free, but canned food donations are accepted for the East County Resource Center backpack program, which supports children in Washougal schools who need meals on the weekends.

The event kicks off Red Ribbon Week, which is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country.

‘Love & Logic’ parenting classes coming this month

There will be two “Love & Logic,” parenting classes, aimed at different age levels, starting this month. The classes are facilitated by Melyssa Scott.

The first, “Early childhood parenting made fun,” for parents of children from birth to age 5, will include lessons on how to put an end to public misbehavior, show children alternatives to whining and arguing, smoothing out mornings and bedtimes, calming sibling bickering, and teaching respect, responsibility and self discipline.

This class runs from 6 to 8 p.m., Oct. 29, Nov. 12, Dec. 3, Jan. 14 and Jan. 28. The cost is $50, plus $10 for the workbook.

The second class, “Becoming a Love and Logic Parent,” is for parents of children ages 6 and older. The class will address topics such as avoiding power struggles, staying calm when a child does upsetting things, setting enforceable limits, avoiding enabling and begin empowering, helping children learn from their mistakes and more.

This class runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 22, Nov. 5, Nov. 19, Dec. 10, Jan. 21, Feb. 4 and Feb. 18. The cost is $60, plus an additional $10 for the workbook. Childrcare is available at both classes, but those interested must RSVP.

Washougal resident earns scholarship

Western Washington University student Tamir Bresler, son of Steward and Sagit Bresler of Washougal, received a $1,500 scholarship from the Rathmann Scholarship Foundation for the 2013-14 academic year.

The scholarship is awarded to chemistry or biology majors who demonstrate financial need.

Bresler graduated from Washougal High School in 2009, and is scheduled to graduate from Western with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry.

Bresler is currently doing undergraduate research in Biochemistry, is a laboratory assistant and a member of the student board for Western’s Chabad on Campus Jewish organization. After graduation, he plans to go to medical school.

Camas resident named to dean’s list

Katherine Brown, of Camas, was named to the dean’s list at Carroll College in Helena, Mont.

To be named to the list, a student must earn at least a 3.5 average GPA.

WSU Vancouver offers financial aid and scholarships workshop

Students can learn how to pay for college at Washington State University Vancouver’s A-Z of Financial Aid and Scholarships Workshop offered multiple times through the end of the year.

Free and open to the public, this workshop is for all college-bound students no matter their age, current financial situation or what school they plan to attend.

Workshops will be offered:

*6 – 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, Student Services Center, room 101

*7 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, Dengerink Administration building, room 110 (this workshop is part of Preview Day, which starts at 5:30 p.m.)

*5 – 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, Student Services Center, room 101

*1 – 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, Vancouver Community Library, 901 “C” St.

The workshops are led by trained financial aid experts, who will answer commonly asked questions such as: What is financial aid? What happens after I file my FAFSA? Are there any scholarships available? When and how do I get my money?

WSU names students to honor roll

The Washington State University President’s summer honor roll recognizes students who stand above the rest with excellent academic performance.

To be eligible for the honor roll, undergraduate students must be enrolled in a minimum of nine graded hours in a single term at WSU and earn a grade point average of 3.75 or earn a 3.50 cumulative GPA based on 15 cumulative hours of graded work.
