Camas and Washougal recognized as safe cities

Camas and Washougal are among the safest cities in Washington, according to a recent report.

Camas ranked 18th out of the 50 cities that made the list, while Washougal ranked 22nd.

According to SafeWise’s research, the chance of becoming a victim of crime in Camas is one in 1,659, a stark contrast to the state odds of one in 338.

“Camas police consider their values and methods to be ‘old fashioned,’ explaining that officers ‘like to communicate with people face-to-face when possible’ and ‘that the best results are achieved when we work cooperatively with our citizens,’” the report states.

Washougal was highlighted for its laid-back atmosphere and proximity to the Columbia River Gorge.

“A growing suburb of Portland, Washougal is currently experiencing a revival of its downtown district and offers a safe place for families seeking a sense of community, rich history and incomparable recreation,” states the report.

To compile the report, SafeWise used the most recent FBI crime data from 2012, population, and other factors including unique safety initiatives and security programs implemented within the past few years.

The list of hundreds of cities in Washington was narrowed to 50, and assigned rankings according to how the city met the criteria.

“It’s great to know the Pacific Northwest offers so many safe communities and breathtaking scenery,” said Rebecca Edwards, SafeWise security analyst. “With low crime rates and an abundance of community pride, these Washington cities know how to take care of their own.”

The top five safest cities were listed as Connell, Sammamish, Duvall, Pullman and Dupont.
