Camas musician wins Gold at VSO competition

A Camas resident was among three Young Artists who won Gold Medals Jan. 31 Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Competition.

At Trinity Lutheran Church in Vancouver, eight young musical stars performed at the 22nd annual event.

For his cello performance Richard Lu, of Camas, earned a $1,000 scholarship. He and the other two Gold Medal finishers will perform their winning selections as guest artists with Maestro Salvador Brotons and the VSO at April 9 and 10 concerts at Skyview Concert Hall.

The other local winner was pianist Monica Chang, of Camas, who took home a Bronze Medal.

Local student graduates from FPU

Bridget Raach of Camas earned a Master of Business Administration degree in kinesiology from Fresno Pacific University.

Commencement ceremonies were held in December 2015.

Youth commission seeks award nominations

The 18th annual Youth Achievement Awards celebration is scheduled for Sunday, June 12, and nominations of youth ages 11 to 19 are being accepted. Up to 300 young people will receive awards.

Coordinated by the Clark County Youth Commission under the guidance of the Department of Community Services, the award program recognizes youth who have demonstrated achievement in any of the following 13 categories: Career development, citizenship, courage, education, empathy, environmental stewardship, family life, inspiration, leadership, personal achievement, sportsmanship and tolerance.

Anyone may submit nominations and youth may nominate themselves. Forms are available at clark.wa.gov/community-services/youth-house.

Mail completed nomination forms to Youth Achievement Celebration, Attn: Clark County Youth House, P.O. Box 5000, Vancouver, WA 98666-5000.

Forms must be postmarked no later than Tuesday, March 1. These can also be faxed to 397-2164 by 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 1.

Camas student named to UI dean’s list

Two Camas students, Maxwell J. Emerson and Tiffany N. Smith, were named to the dean’s list at the University of Idaho in Moscow.

To be named to the list, students must earn at least a 3.5 GPA.

Locals land on George Fox dean’s list

Several local residents have been named to the dean’s list at George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon.

Students must earn a 3.5 GPA or higher on 12 or more hours of graded work to earn a spot on the dean’s list.

The following local students earned recognition: They are Paige Bergstrom, Kalissa Brooks, Blake Christopher, Sarah Emerson, Ashley Meyer, Jessamine Miller, Sierra Robertson, Carson Tidland, Eden Wiegand and Katelin Wight of Camas, and Stephen Lauser and Nate Weston of Washougal.

Student film festival entry deadline approaching

All Camas School District students in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to submit a three minute or less video on “The Impact of Giving Back,” which could potentially be screened at the Liberty Theatre in Camas.

Films can be fictional or short documentaries about the topic. The deadline is Monday, Feb. 15.

Blank makes dean’s list

Charlene M. Blank has been named to the fall 2015 dean’s high honors list at Utica College in Utica, New York.
