The Washington State Transportation Commission will be in Vancouver this week to meet with local officials and business leaders to learn about the region’s transportation issues, challenges and successes.

The meeting takes place 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, in the Commission Conference Room, Port of Vancouver, 3103 N.W. Lower River Road. The meeting is open to the public and persons wishing to speak to the commission may do so during the public comment period scheduled for 4:45 p.m.

The meeting will feature a series of short presentations on successes and challenges, future plans and transportation needs in Vancouver and throughout Clark County. Elected city and county officials, city administrators and county staff will discuss street and road conditions, and how land use and transportation affects community development.

In addition, Leadership from the Southwest Washington Regional Transportation Council, C-Tran, local ports, and the Washington State Department of Transportation will brief the commission on topics including public transportation, freight rail, air transportation, and state highway preservation and maintenance.

On Wednesday afternoon, a panel of public and private sector leaders will discuss the role of air, water and surface transportation related to economic opportunities throughout the Vancouver-Portland metropolitan area. Another session focuses on the increasing popularity of walking and bicycling as primary transportation modes. School, public health and city officials will talk about actions they are taking to improve and expand these healthy options.

The Washington State Transportation Commission holds several meetings in various locations of the state each year to gain insight from local government, industry and citizens about transportation issues that affect their communities and region. This information helps the commission to develop and implement transportation policies and recommendations that reflect the priorities of the people and local governments throughout the State of Washington. The commission will meet in Kennewick and Marysville later this year.
