Local blood banks sent out an urgent appeal for donors this week, after an Amtrak passenger train derailed off an Interstate 5 overpass between Tacoma and Olympia Monday morning, killing three people and injuring more than 70 others.
The incident stressed regional blood banks, said James P. AuBuchon, MD, president and CEO of Bloodworks Northwest, a nonprofit that provides donated blood to more than 90 hospitals in Washington, Oregon and Alaska, including PeaceHealth hospitals in Southwest Washington.
