Memorial Day events to be held in Camas, Washougal

Veterans, Scouts to participate in commemorations

Memorial Day will be commemorated with several ceremonies this weekend in Camas and Washougal.
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who died in the nation’s service.
The following ceremonies are open to the public:
Fern Prairie Cemetery
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4278 will conduct a ceremony at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 26, at the Fern Prairie Cemetery, 25700 N.E. Robinson Road, Camas.
The names of veterans buried at the cemetery will be read aloud. Refreshments will be served, and genealogy books will be available to view.
Clark County Cemetery District 1 commissioners and volunteers will be available to answer questions Saturday, May 26, Sunday, May 27, and Monday, May 28, from 9 a.m. to dusk.
Volunteers will place flags on veterans’ graves Thursday, May 24.

Camas Cemetery
Boy Scouts will participate in a flag ceremony at 9 a.m., Monday, May 28, at the Camas Cemetery, 630 N.E. Oak St.
Members of VFW Post 4278 will supervise Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts as the scouts place small flags at each veteran’s gravesite, Saturday, May 26.
Forty-five American flags, 13 state flags and five service flags will be placed around the cemetery Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings and taken down in the afternoons.
Members of the Friends of the Cemetery will be available to answer questions and help people find gravesites from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
“A lot of people come from out of town, to decorate the gravesites of their loved ones,” Eunice Abrahamsen, a member of the Friends of the Cemetery, said.

Washougal Memorial Cemetery
The City of Washougal, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and American Legion Women’s Auxiliary invites the community to commemorate Memorial Day at 11 a.m., Monday, May 28, at the Washougal Memorial Cemetery, 3329 “Q” St.
Washougal City Councilman Ray Kutch, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and former Naval flight officer and instructor, will be the guest speaker.
Representatives of a variety of organizations — including Spanish American War Veterans, World War I Veterans, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Navy Mothers, Gold Star Mothers, Vietnam Veterans, The Order of the Silver Rose and VFW Auxiliary — will present commemorative wreaths.
“The memorial service usually lasts a little over an hour, and some people bring camping chairs to watch from,” Chris Fuller, adjutant finance officer for the Sons of the American Legion Post 122, said.
The city of Washougal will provide refreshments, handed out by members of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. Scouts will place flags around the cemetery on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
