The West Columbia Gorge Humane Society has rescheduled its annual Hike on the Dike fundraising dog walk to Saturday, July 10.

The group had planned to hold the event on Saturday, June 26, but delayed the event after the National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for the region.

“After checking the hourly forecast and seeing that we (were) expected to see 81 degrees by 9 a.m., we consulted with our veterinarians,” the group stated on its website. “We all agreed that for the safety of all the pets and people involved, postponing the event is the right thing to do.”

The in-person event is now slated to take place July 10, at the Washougal dog shelter (ADDRESS), with staggered groups of walkers — and their canine companions — walking along the Columbia River Dike Trail.

The event will also feature a DJ, raffles, a children’s scavenger hunt along the walking path, and merchandise for sale including WCGHS swag and pet accessories.

Fundraising for the Washougal area pet shelter will remain open through June 30.

As of Thursday, June 24, six teams with 77 participants had signed up for the fundraiser and 86 people had donated to help the animal shelter meet its 2021 goal of raising $20,000.

Those who want to help the animal shelter but cannot participate in the walk can still become a fundraiser.

Several local restaurants and bars will host a “Yappy Hour” following the fundraiser to help raise more money for the local animal shelter.  For more information about the Hike on the Dike event, visit wcghs.org.
