Pickleball player urges city of Camas to keep shared courts

I was disheartened to read the article, “Parks chief seeks solution to pickleball-tennis conflict,” on the front page of The Post Record this week. I would be remiss if I didn’t voice my opinion on the issue.

I have been a resident of Camas for 21 years and work in Camas as well. My daughter and I started playing pickleball a little over two years ago. We were delighted to learn that the city provides pickleball nets at both Crown Park and Grass Valley. Just another reason to love our little town. We typically play one to three times a week, April to October due to the rain.

In our over two years of playing, we have never once had an issue with disrespectful players tennis or pickleball nor have we witnessed anything other than respectful use by both tennis and pickleball players.

The comment regarding pickleball players being from “elsewhere” in my opinion is hyperbole. Everyone that we have shared the courts with is from Camas or Washougal. I have also not found the courts to ever be littered with anything other than leaves or pine needles, no human trash.

I encourage the city to continue to have the ability to play both tennis and pickleball at both locations. On a hot day, the shade of the Crown Park courts is most enjoyable. With the popularity of pickleball only increasing for all ages — for our older citizens it is a viable exercise activity much more accessible than tennis for most — it would be remiss of the city to limit the opportunities to play either racket sport.

Suzy Truitt,
