Camas should keep fluoride in drinking water

Camas should keep fluoride in our drinking water. Fluoride is safe, effective, and keeps our community healthy. For over 60 years, fluoride has helped us prevent tooth decay. Major health groups like the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and American Dental Association strongly support fluoride because it works.

Without fluoride, cavities increase, especially in children. Spokane, which doesn’t fluoridate its water, sees higher rates of tooth decay compared to the state average. Cities like Calgary, Canada, and Juneau, Alaska, removed fluoride and quickly saw more cavities and higher dental costs.

Some people say toothpaste alone is enough, but that depends too much on personal habits. Water fluoridation helps everyone, no matter their income or access to dental care. It’s not forced medication — it’s similar to adding vitamin D to milk or iodine to salt, proven ways we protect public health.

Removing fluoride would harm our community, especially those most at risk. Keeping fluoride means healthier teeth, fewer dentist visits, and lower costs for all families. Let’s continue protecting our health by keeping fluoride in Camas water.
