Spring seems to have comes early, which is not good for winter skiing

The calendar says early February, but the weather feels more like the first week of April.

Unfortunately for winter sports enthusiasts, those conditions also exist up on the slopes.

Ski areas up on Mt. Hood are reporting “Spring-like conditions,” meaning hard and fast conditions at the start of the day, quickly transition to “corn snow and then slush.”

But at least areas like Timberline and Mt. Hood Meadows are still operating.

The same cannot be said for Mt. Hood SkiBowl down at pass level.

SkiBowl did not open for skiing and snowboarding until the last week in December. But earlier this week, the resort suspended operations on the slopes as its snow base has been warn away by several weeks of no snow and warm temperatures.

While skiing and riding operations are suspended “until further notice,” SkiBowl’s West Rope Tow Terrain Park will be open noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Also, tubing remains open and operating normally for all Day and Cosmic sessions.

Up at Timberline Lodge, the base at 6,000 feet is down to 34 inches, and much of the lower-elevation runs and lifts are closed.

Summit Pass, Heidi’s and Summit Pass, Jeff Flood and Molly’s lifts will remain closed until the return of sufficient snow.

Mt. Hood Meadows is reporting a 34-inch snow base at its base and 44 inches at 6,250 feet.

But there some possible good news in the forecast.

According to the National Weather Service, a storm is set to arrive this weekend, starting as rain on the mountain on Saturday, before transitioning to snow on Sunday. Meadows could see 6 to 12 inches of snow by Monday.

And a chance of snow remains in the forecast all week at the higher elevations.

Down at Government Camp, where SkiBowl resides, it may be until Monday before snow starts to build back.

The amount of snow in the forecast at pass level remains unclear for next week, and SkiBowl would need significant snowfall to rebuild its base.
