Late goal gives Skyview soccer draw against Camas, 4A GSHL title

The Skyview boys soccer team celebrated twice on Friday night at Kiggins Bowl, and neither time did they get the win.

But the Storm didn’t need to win.

Lucas Angelback scored a goal in the final minute of regulation and the Storm withstood overtime to score a 2-2 draw against Camas to clinch the 4A Greater St. Helens League title.

“It means I was able to make my brothers proud, make our seniors proud,” Angelback said. “Make their dreams come true after these past couple of seasons not going as we planned. And now this season is finally looking up for us.”

Also not part of the plan for the Storm was to fall behind two goals to the Papermakers early in the second half.

Cooper Schneider converted a penalty kick in the fourth minute, then Trenton Lachenmeier punched in a cross from Aiden Saban in the 48th minute to put Camas up 2-0.

But the Storm weren’t going to let their shot to wrap up the league title slip away that easily.

“We just got to learn to play our game and put it out for them,” Toren Baker said. “There’s not much else we can do but play our game. That’s what we did, and that’s how we got out on top.”

Skyview’s push finally resulted in a goal when Leif Evenson converted a penalty kick in the 61st minute.

The Storm were frantic in the closing minutes of regulation to get the ever important second goal.

They finally worked a throw-in deep in Camas’ side of the field.

Caden Goode lobbed the ball in front of the Camas goal, where Baker got the first touch with a header across the goal face.

The ball found its way past a mass of players to Angelback, who knocked it in for the goal.

“I can’t really remember,” Angelback said. “It was a such a jumble. All I remember is seeing the ball go in front of me. My back was faced towards the goal. I was like I got to send it. I got to just fall back and hit it.”

Baker said: “Yeah, I’m front post. I was hoping to get a flick on that. I got under it. It worked out. I’m lucky I had Lucas far post to finish that.”

After scoring, Angelback got up off the turf, sprinted toward the student section as he ripped off his jersey and waved it around his head.

That earned the junior a yellow card and a trip to the sideline. He never got a chance to reenter the game when the official blew the whistle marking the end of regulation.

That sent Skyview players into celebrations as the Kiggins Bowl public address announcer declared the Storm as 4A GSHL champions.

There was only one problem. They still had to play two 5-minute overtimes.

The Storm played the overtimes like they were protecting a lead. A draw would be good enough to secure a league title.

Alex Mejia Carrillo came up with one clutch save as the Storm rode out the overtimes.

When the real final whistle came, it was Baker who tore off his jersey before being swarmed by teammates in celebration.

“It means so much to us,” Baker said. “Before the season even started, preseason, Sean (Janson), our coach, got us together and he asked us ‘What’s the goal? What’s the goal?’ And we told him league champs. And we worked and worked and worked. We got here, and that’s what were all pushing for this season.”
