Fiddlers provide comfort & joy

Ernie Warwick fiddles because he enjoys it, and he hopes the audiences do as well. As a member of the Old Time Fiddlers, he has several opportunities each month to give and receive enjoyment. Warwick, 83, of Camas, plays a fiddle and guitar. He has been fiddling for 26 years and playing a guitar since he was 18.

Up to 900 lose telephone service in Washougal

Frontier Communications employees will soon begin repair work on telephone line damage that has resulted in 700 to 900 residences in the Washougal area losing phone service.

Camas couple found dead in apparent suicide

The bodies of a 53-year-old male and 44-year-old female, a married couple, were discovered inside their residence at the 1500 block of Northwest 10th Avenue at approximately 10:51 p.m.

A track hoe compacts rock after the replacement of a gas line at the 2100 block of "E" Street, in Washougal. Drivers have had to slow down or stop as single lane closures went into effect on the roadway. An $8.1 million project will include conversion of the road width to two through-lanes and a center left turn lane, as well as bike lanes and sidewalks from Sixth to 32nd streets. It is expected to be completed in August 2011.

‘E’ Street work is underway

As a crew from NW Natural Gas replaces a gas line under "E" Street, motorists have endured slower speeds and stoppages while under the direction of traffic control employees. Flaggers from K & D Services were recently directing traffic outside "A" Your Town Chimney Inc., 2126 "E" St.

Children and adults are served complimentary dinners Monday and Thursday evenings at the Lost and Found Cafe, in the social hall at Zion Lutheran Church, in Camas. The cafe, an outreach program of the Inter-Faith Treasure House, is among several low- or no-cost meal options in Camas and Washougal. "It is wonderful being here, getting warm food," said Charles Shaver, of Washougal (not pictured).

Lost and Found Cafe offers Food and Fellowship

When entering the social hall at Zion Lutheran Church, it could be a challenge to determine who is benefitting more from the Lost and Found Cafe -- the volunteers serving food or individuals enjoying the complimentary dinners. Charles Shaver has been eating at the cafe for two years. He is a retired farmer from North Dakota who moved to Washougal six years ago. "It is wonderful and real good food," Shaver said regarding the cafe. "It helps a lot with the grocery bill."

City recognizes outstanding workers

The man who served as the Washougal interim finance director -- in between the terms of Jeffrey Bivens and Jennifer Forsberg -- is the "Employee of the Year." Assistant Finance Director RJ Stevenson was recognized with the "Overall Excellence in Public Service" award. Summary comments provided by the nomination selection committee mentioned the finance department has had a couple of "turbulent years of leadership." "He has quietly stepped up to the plate in administering the budget process for the last two years," the committee wrote about Stevenson. "This has resulted in many extra hours of work. However, he has completed the task without any complaint. He is amazing."

Parents lobby to get new domestic violence law passed after daughter’s death

"Love you Mama." Those were the words Kerry Crane heard from her daughter Erin as the 25-year-old left her parents' Washougal home and headed to a job interview on Nov. 12, 2007. Later that evening, police found Erin Dawn Wilson dead at a house northeast of Vancouver. The young woman with the captivating smile had been strangled with her favorite scarf, her body was wrapped in a blanket stained with blood. The next day arrested and charged with first-degree murder was Wilson's husband, Larry F. Van Schaick. He eventually pleaded guilty and is now serving a 14 year sentence. "She was just getting her life back together," Crane said.

Sean Emberlin, 7, and his grandfather Bill Emberlin browse the selection at the Prune Hill Elementary School Scholastic book fair on Monday morning. The event is being held this week in conjunction with Superhero Costume Day and Grandparent Breakfast. In an effort to get everyone into the spirit of the event, masks and capes were available for students at the library. Other events this week will include story times with special guest readers and a live reptile show.

Super duper readers

It's a bird. It's a plane. No, it's a Prune Hill Elementary School student dressed in a cape and mask dashing into the book fair on Monday. Students took full advantage of what school Librarian Meghan Johnson describes as an "over the top," idea to combine Superhero Dress Up Day with the school's annual Scholastic book fair. To top it off, this is also the week that grandparents are invited to eat breakfast with students.
