If it persists into the upcoming weekend — and since the president has threatened to keep it going for months or even years if he doesn’t get his way, there’s a good chance it will — the federal government shutdown will be the longest in United States history.

As someone who has spent the majority of her adult life working at weekly newspapers, I tend to get overly excited during the annual whittling down of that year’s “top 10” stories.

The photos from the “big reveal” inside the Downtown Camas Association (DCA) office Tuesday morning only go so far in capturing the pure excitement running through the room as executives from the web series “Small Business Revolution — Main Street,” which runs on Hulu, presented a live announcement of the top 10 cities in the running for the grand prize — a $500,000 downtown business makeover and a whole season in which to promote Camas and its small business community.
At first, I couldn’t quite put my finger on what was so different about the city council meeting I was watching on video. The discussion — about budgets and funding new staff positions — was similar to the hundreds of council meetings I’d watched in my 20-plus years as a community news reporter. But there was just something … off.
It’s the season of giving thanks and we have an abundance of cheers to hand out in this November Cheers & Jeers column.

The “blue wave” looks a lot more impressive a week after the midterm elections. Democrats have gained 33 seats in the House and could pick up another six when all votes have been counted. According to NPR, despite the fact that House districts are now “far more gerrymandered to favor Republicans” the midterm election produced “the most House seats gained by Democrats since the wave elections following Watergate.”
No matter which “side” you were on, there was plenty to celebrate — and mourn — when the midterm election results started to shake out Tuesday night.
