Celebrate Camas-Washougal history on Earth Day

Rain, shine or stormy weather, it's not uncommon to see the white "Offender Work Crew" van parked at a variety of locations around Camas and Washougal on an almost daily basis. The participants are "doing time" clearing blackberry vines from walkways, cleaning up downed branches after storms, picking up litter, and maintaining area trails, in addition to a variety of other tasks.
After a search that yielded a handful of top candidates from Oregon and Washington, on Friday the Washougal School Board announced that it had selected veteran Oregon administrator Dawn Tarzian as its newest school district leader. Tarzian, who will replace the retiring Teresa Baldwin, currently serves as the superintendent for the Corvallis [Ore.] School District, and has worked in administrative positions in other school districts in Oregon during her long career as well.

In June 2010, laws governing the use of cell phones for making and taking calls and text messaging while driving got a whole lot stricter. This is when these actions became primary offenses, meaning police can issue drivers a $124 ticket for this violation alone.
Nature in its most glorified state is on display at the Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Washougal. In addition to more than 200 species of birds that have been spotted there, the refuge contains more than 1,000 acres of historic lakebed, river bottomland habitat and oak woodlands. It often serves as a migration corridor for a variety of birds, and supports anadromous fish migration, breeding neo tropical birds and wintering ducks and geese.
To a kid, heroes are often considered the characters who are camouflaged by mysterious masks, wear elaborate armor, and fly, catapult or otherwise transport themselves from one location to another -- saving lives and fighting crime against evil villains.
It seems as if the new year just began, but the upcoming 2011 elections are already on the minds of many local residents and the elected officials who may have to battle to keep their positions. While a few current elected leaders have announced their intention to seek re-election, speculation is beginning to surface about those who may want to give public service a try.
After much discussion and deliberation during the past year on the issue of tweaking local fireworks regulations, the Camas City Council has finally whittled down an option that reduces the period of time fireworks can be legally discharged within city limits.
The bright green light pole banners advertising the Mother's Day Plant and Garden Fair will be missing from downtown Camas this year. Instead of being held along Northeast Fourth Avenue and its side streets, as the event has for more than a decade, the 14th annual festival on May 7 is being moved several miles away to the Camas High School campus.
