The mission of local school districts is "success for all," whether it is students, staff or administrators. That was the message of the annual State of the Schools address at the Camas-Washougal Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Thursday. Camas Superintendent Mike Nerland and Washougal Superintendent Dawn Tarzian spoke about their respective districts after some good-natured ribbing.
Before an unexpected renovation over winter break, the adaptive skills classroom at Jemtegaard Middle School looked more like a kitchen. White walls, salmon pink cabinets and cold tile floors were the prime features of the room, which was formerly used for home economics classes. Its location at the school also meant the infamous east Gorge wind blowing through, and without a carpet, things got cold.
The inside of the Camas Community Center had a patriotic air on Sunday, Jan. 6, while local students were honored for their writing by the District 6 Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary. Twenty-one award winners were escorted to their seats before reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and listening to guest speaker, Camas Mayor Scott Higgins. "It is a true honor to share some thoughts with you during this wonderful ceremony," he said. The theme of this year's essay competition for middle school students was, "What I Would Tell America's Founding Fathers," and "Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?" for high school students. Elementary School students were also included in a state junior essay contest.
Students in Washougal High School's American Sign Language class come away with more than just a language skill that could help them get a job or lead to a career. They also learn to appreciate diversity and gain understanding of the deaf culture.
Help works. That was the overriding theme of Suicide Prevention Week at Washougal High School.
A local robotics team from Camas fared well at a recent regional competition. The Mechanikids won first overall in robot performance, as well as a trophy for a spot in the state competition this Saturday and Sunday. Both the regional and state competition consists of Core Values judging, Research Presentation, and Robot Performance.
'E-Waste' recycling event is next weekend< /strong> The Clark County Skills Center Electro-Digital Technologies Program is hosting a post-holiday "E-Waste" recycling event from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, at the Skills Center, 12200 N.E. 28th St. in Vancouver.
'Scholarships 101' is Wednesday Washington State University Vancouver will host a "Scholarships 101" workshop at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 2 in the Dengerink Administration building, room 110. The event is free to the public and free parking will be available in the Orange 1 lot.
Camas resident makes dean's list Cameron Kwan, a second-year student in Rochester Institute of Technology College of Imaging Arts and Sciences, has made the dean’s list for the fall 2012 quarter.
"It is better to give than receive," is a common phrase. But what does it really mean? Cape Horn-Skye Elementary School fourth-graders found out when they participated in "The Giving Tree Project," which allowed them to help the less fortunate at Open House Ministries in Vancouver. The students made crafts and ornaments in class. Then, they held a craft fair at the school holiday concert where parents "purchased" their creations by donating food and clothing for people in need, instead of paying with money. Their efforts netted more than 850 items.
