Microsoft IT Academy certification offered at Camas High School

With the goal of helping students thrive in a difficult job climate, Camas High School is offering a pilot program to help them become certified in different Microsoft Office products. The pilot program is offered through a partnership between Microsoft and the state of Washington. All participating schools receive testing vouchers, which normally cost $100 each. This year, CHS is offering certification to ninth-grade students as a part of the Freshman Academy, which is a transitional class to help the youngest students adjust to high school. Since it is a pilot program, this year PowerPoint is being offered, with the goal of expanding it to Excel, Word and Publisher next year, and eventually offer the program to the entire high school.

Kelley makes dean's list Megan Kelley of Camas was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Boise State University. Kelley is a 2011 graduate of Camas High School.

The CEF phone-a-thon will take place Tuesday to Thursday, Feb. 21-23. It raises money for grants at Camas schools.

CEF phone-a-thon coming this week

Local residents will soon hear their phones ring with eager middle school students on the other end of the line, seeking financial support for the Camas Educational Foundation. The 13th annual phone-a-thon will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. from Tuesday, Feb. 21 to Thursday, Feb. 23. This year, CEF is hoping to raise $18,000, which will go directly to mini and major grant programs at Camas schools.

Local family enjoys entering canine competitions

As far back as Corie Hebert can remember, she and her mom, Kim, have attended the Rose City Classic dog show in Portland. After watching the handling portion, she decided to try it out. "I just thought it would be fun," she said.

Students graduate from WWU Kyle Ebersole of Camas and Jessica Young of Washougal earned degrees from Western Washington University in fall quarter 2011. Ebersole earned a bachelor of arts in psychology, and Young earned a bachelor of arts in theater.

Local student named to MSU honor roll Kierstyn Tuel of Camas has been named to the fall semester honor roll at Montana State University in Bozeman. To be named to the honor roll, students must earn at least a 3.5 GPA for the semester.

Camas teen leads by example

An aspiring medical professional is enjoying his time serving as president of the American Red Cross of Southwest Washington Youth Council. Kendrick "Kenny" Kim, 17, of Camas, has been on the council for two years. Before that time, he volunteered to assist with Red Cross office tasks and he cleaned the faces of mannequins that were used in CPR classes. Kim then became a member of the Red Cross Club at Mountain View High School, before he applied to serve as a member of the youth council. That involved submitting an application, as well as a teacher's recommendation, to the executive board of the council.

The deadline for registering to enter The Art Institutes Best Teen Chef Competition for high school seniors or The Art Institutes Culinary Scholarship Competition for high school graduates is Friday, Feb. 3.

New board member Karen Rubino wants to become more involved

Electrician. Construction manager. Business co-owner. Mother. Karen Rubino has had several titles during her life and now she’s adding another: School board member. Rubino, a 14-year Washougal resident, is the newest member of the Washougal School Board. When asked why she ran for the board, Rubino said she wanted to make a difference in her community and the timing was right.
