Students from Camas and Washougal high schools will see who can bring in the most food, clothing and toy donations for the annual Stuff the Bus contest. All donations will go to local charities. The Camas-Washougal Business Alliance coordinates the event.

‘Stuff the Bus’ is Dec. 10

Get non-perishable food and hometown pride ready, because Stuff the Bus is coming back to Camas and Washougal high school from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10. The event, presented by the Camas-Washougal Business Alliance, benefits the Children's Home Society of Washington, the Inter-Faith Treasure House and the C.A.R.O.L. program. The community is invited to join students, staff, parents and others at either Camas or Washougal high school for the third-annual event.

‘Fiddler on the Roof’ coming

"Fiddler on the Roof," will come to life when Christian Youth Theatre presents the classic musical in Washougal. In the little village of Anatevka, Tevye, a poor dairyman, tries to instill in his five daughters the traditions of his tight-knit Jewish community in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia.

Discovering a new artist

Ten-year-old Tessa Rose never would have guessed that her quickly drawn picture would win a contest from entries around the state. But that's exactly what happened. Last spring, the then fourth-grader was in art class when teacher Kathy Marty asked students to draw pictures to enter into the Tacoma Musem of Glass, "Kids Design Glass" contest.

Educational foundation seeking grant proposals

The Camas Educational Foundation recently announced the launch of its 2010-11 grant cycle. CEF grants are intended for innovative programs that improve the quality and level of student learning. CEF offers two categories of grants, mini grants and major grants. CEF is seeking applications for its mini grants and major grants, each of which supports programs that directly and actively engage Camas students. The initial application deadline for each grant category is Friday, Jan. 14.

School notes for Nov. 23, 2010

Winter kids' craft event set The Camas Public Library is hosting a craft event for children in second- through eighth-grade at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2. All supplies are provided for kids to make their own miniature snowman. The library is located at 625 N.E. Fourth Ave. Pre-registration is not required.

Washougal residents will perform in upcoming play

Local residents Genny Billington and Jessica Hatton will appear in the Metropolitan Performing Arts Academy's upcoming production of "Gypsy." It will be a family production, as both girls will be performing on stage with their brothers, John Billington and Cameron Hatton, and their mothers, Wendi Billington and Stephanie Hatton.

Kids helping kids

A jar of peanut butter seems like such a small thing to most of us. But to orphans eking out a daily existence in the filthy garbage dumps of Mexico, it's a lifeline. Students in John Condon's seventh-grade science class at Skyridge Middle School are helping to contribute to this important nutritional need by collecting jars of peanut butter. These will be taken to Mexico by the brother of another Skryidge teacher, Gail Welsh. It is the fourth year of the school peanut butter collection efforts.

WHS students recognized for academic success

Several Washougal High School students recently earned academic honors. Alexander Maxa has been awarded semifinalist status in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. He is among 16,000 semi-finalists and is one of the highest scoring entrants in Washington state. Patrick McCarthy has been named a "commended student" in the national merit program. McCarthy is one among 34,000 students throughout the nation to be recognized for exceptional academic promise.
