In just seven weeks, six Grass Valley Elementary students have achieved an important milestone: Running at least 100 miles in the school jogging program. The students achieved this goal by logging laps on a dirt path during recess. They include Rachel Blair, Patrick Upkes, Will Schultz, Cole Kendall, Jordan Chase and Abby Sherwood, who ran 125, 115, 125, 115, 101 and 100 miles, respectively.
Imagine being in the seventh-grade, and starting school without new clothes, school supplies or even basic hygiene products. Although this may sound like a bad dream, it's a reality for thousands of foster kids who are literally whisked away on a moment's notice, unable to pack more than a few basic items. This is where Bridge the Gap comes in. The Clark County organization is a community outreach program designed to enrich the lives of abused and neglected children.

On a clear day in late September, Lacamas Heights Elementary School students, teachers and parents took action to gather funds and improve students' awareness about their health. Lacamas students participated in a school-wide Sport-A-Thon held at the Camas High School track, where they participated in activities to promote muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility. The Sport-A-Thon, a partnership between the school and parents, was held during the school day as part of the students' physical education program.
Curtis Crosby has two great loves: Cooking and fajitas. So, it was no surprise that the 12-year-old Washougal resident decided to combine his two favorites into a winning combination: A fajita burger, which took first place at the Washington Square Mall Red Robin Kids Burger Cook-Off contest.

After struggling in math for several years, teacher and former journalist Jonathan Burton knows what it's like to feel confused by the subject. That's why when he heard Dr. Frank Wang speak at a conference earlier this summer, he really connected with the topic. "Doctor Wang was deemed unteachable when he was in grade school and was a very marginal student," Burton said. "I struggled as a kid so I could really relate to him."

Interested in a trip to Waikiki, exclusive holiday shopping in downtown Camas or a 3D television with Blue Ray? If so, then mark Saturday, Oct. 23 on the calendar, because that is the date of the Camas Educational Foundation's 12th annual auction. The event, which benefits the foundation's grant program for local schools, is undergoing a number of changes this year. It will be held locally at Camas Meadows Golf Club, instead of downtown Vancouver. Another plus is that childcare will be offered at the nearby Grass Valley Elementary School by students in the Camas High School Key Club and child development program.
