Tsering Shola of Camas is one of three youth finalists in the 2017 Oticon Focus on People Awards, a national competition that recognizes those helping to change perspectives of what it means to live with hearing loss. Here, she is pictured at the International Science and Engineering Fair earlier this year. Below, in her down time, Shola enjoys the outdoors, and summitted Mount Baker with a team of young women through the Girls on Ice program, a free wilderness and science education program for high school girls.

Soon to be sixth-graders recently participated in a week-long UPWARD camp at Liberty Middle School, to prepare them for the first days of school, including the often-dreaded ritual of opening a locker.

The thought of opening a locker on the first day of school can strike fear into the heart of even the bravest 11-year-old, who has likely seen at least one television show or movie depicting middle school as a scary place where sixth-graders get bullied and stuffed into lockers.
