‘High expectations’ for local athletes as fall prep sports get underway

After a tumultuous 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, prep sports in Camas-Washougal are off to a more normal start this fall. Following is a preview of three local teams — Washougal volleyball, Camas boys golf and Washougal cross country — that have set their aspirations high for the 2021 prep sports season:

Washougal motocross racer honored

Washougal native Levi Kitchen was awarded the Nicky Hayden American Motocross Association’s Horizon Award, presented annually to the amateur motocross racer with the most promising professional career, earlier this month.

Camas Heat win big at Oregon Hoopla

After the Camas Heat youth basketball team defeated its opponent to win the boys 11-and-under division championship at the 2021 Oregon Hoopla 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament in Salem, Oregon, on Aug. 8, the vanquished squad’s coach approached Camas coach Jeremy Fogle and said, “We just can’t get over the ‘Camas hump.’”

C-W Babe Ruth team takes 2nd at regional tourney

Steve Sutton wasn’t completely confident that his Camas-Washougal 15U all-star baseball team could make a deep run at the Pacific Northwest Babe Ruth 13-15 regional tournament, held July 26-31 in Kelso. Sutton knew his team was talented, of course, but he also knew that the other teams were talented as well.
