May 23, 1933 – April 28, 2026
Stanford (Stan) E. Hosman, age 92, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2026. He was born May 23, 1933, in Marmarth, North Dakota, to Wade Leroy Hosman and Minnie Estella (Hughes) Hosman.
Stan spent his early childhood in Marmarth before his family moved to Yakima, Washington, when he was nine. He graduated from Wapato High School in 1951 and, after receiving a scholarship from the George Washington Foundation, enrolled at Yakima Valley College that fall. To help pay his way through school, he worked as a photographer. In 1953, he continued his education at Central Washington State College of Education, earning a BA. While working for the Yakima school district as a teacher and later as a principal, he completed his master’s degree. In 1963, Stan was accepted to Columbia University in New York City and received his Doctor of Education in 1965.
After two years living in Manhattan, Stan and his family moved to Richland, Washington, where he served as a junior high principal and later as assistant superintendent. In 1973 he became superintendent of schools in Camas, Washington, a post he held until his retirement in 1982. While in Camas, Stan and his wife Carol were active community members and hosted two exchange students from Sweden. In 1983 he accepted a position at Serei Gauken Junior College in Hamamatsu, Japan. Upon returning to the Pacific Northwest, Stan continued civic engagement, serving on and at one point presiding over the board of the Vancouver Housing Authority, supporting affordable housing efforts in Clark County. During this period of their lives, they hosted several Japanese exchange college students helping them adjust to life in the United States.
Stan was preceded in death by his wife, Carol, who he loved dearly; sister Mavis; and brothers Robert, Lewis, and Jerry. He is survived by his sister Lillian Hosman of Portland, Oregon; his sons Guy (Washougal, WA) and Kevin (Salida, CO); and two granddaughters, Emma Hosman (Philadelphia, PA) and Camille Hosman (Washington, DC). An avid photographer and bird watcher, Stan loved travel, golf, storytelling, and making new friends. He was known for his deep respect for people and the world around him and believed strongly in giving back to those in need.
A celebration of life will be held at the Camas Public Library on August 1, 2026, at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions should be directed to the Friends and Foundation of the Camas Library, 841 NE 22nd Ave., Camas, WA 98607
