HAROLD N. WITTERS JR.
February 27, 1940 ~ April 11, 2026
Harold N. Witters Jr., 86, passed away peacefully at home on April 11, 2026, in Washougal, WA. Hal was born in Huntingdon, PA, on February 27, 1940, the first of four children of Harold N. and Harriet J. Witters. He attended a one-room elementary school and graduated from New Cumberland High School in 1958. Following high school, he began an eight year career in the Air Force from 1959 to 1967. He was especially proud to have been part of the team that installed NORAD headquarters inside Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado. Hal served as a computer specialist at NORAD for the remainder of his Air Force career.
Three months before his discharge, Hal served as best man at a friend’s wedding in Milwaukee, WI, where he met the love of his life, Maureen Maher, a Milwaukee native and maid of honor at the wedding. Hal and Maureen were married in Milwaukee on June 14, 1969, and began their 56 years of marriage in Oakland, CA, where Hal worked as a Field Engineer for Honeywell Information Systems. Job transfers took them from Oakland, CA, to Seattle, WA, where their daughter Stephanie was born, then to Eugene, OR, where their son Scott was born. When Hal was transferred to Portland, OR, in 1976, they bought acreage in Washougal and Hal built a beautiful log home for his family. He retired from Honeywell in 1997, then worked another three years as a Systems Analyst for Portland Public Schools before retiring again in 2000.
Hal will be remembered for his warmth and friendliness, his unfailing good humor and optimism, his entertaining stories, and his ability to build or repair almost anything. In retirement, Hal kept busy with many home improvement projects and was always ready to lend a helping hand to family, friends, and neighbors. He was also a proud member of VFW Post 4278 Auxiliary and a dedicated volunteer for their many charitable and community service activities.
Hal is survived by his loving wife Maureen; daughter Stephanie Faulkner (Lance); son Scott Witters; granddaughter Marissa Crawford (Brandon) and great-granddaughter Mason; granddaughter Sarah Faulkner; and sister Sharon Sellers (Jerry). He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Robert, and brother Richard.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 6 at 1:00 p.m. at the Camas Community Center, 1718 SE 7th Ave, Camas, WA. Lunch will be provided.
In honor of Hal’s memory, donations may be made to VFW Post 4278 Auxiliary, PO Box 579, Camas, WA 98607.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to the dedicated and compassionate staff of PeaceHealth Southwest Hospice, especially Cherise and Chris.
