Washougal standoff and house fire

On Thursday, more than 20 investigators were at the scene of Wednesday's shooting and house fire on F Place in Washougal.

Washougal resident Bobby Bean (right) was driving to work Wednesday morning when he saw the house at 3275 "F" Place on fire. He stopped, then ran up to the house to see if anyone was inside. He then heard a man inside shout "Go away!" then shots were fired. Bean was not injured.

Fire department crews were on standby for much of the day Wednesday, due to the volatility of the situation involving Steven Stanbary, who shot hundreds of rounds from rifles and handguns during a 90-minute period. It wasn't until just before 6 p.m. that evening that fire crews were able to enter the scene and extinguish what was left of the fire.

Police closed a four-block area in Washougal Wednesday morning as they responded to reports of shots fired and a house on fire. All businesses and residences between 32nd and 34th Streets, and between Evergreen Way and Webster Lane were evacuated. Four schools were also on lock down.
