Camas volleyball qualifies for 4A state meet

The Camas volleyball team qualified for the 4A state tournament by winning two of its four matches at the 4A District 3-4 tournament, held Nov. 11-12, in University Place, Washington. The 4A Greater St. Helens League champion Papermakers (17-3 overall) earned a No. 9 seed into the state tourney and will play No. 8 West Valley (Yakima) in a first-round match at 8:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at the Yakima Valley SunDome. Camas opened bi-district play on Nov. 11, with a 3-0 win over Rogers (Puyallup), then beat Kennedy Catholic 3-1 in a quarterfinal match to clinch a state berth. The next day, the Papermakers lost to Puyallup 3-0 in a semifinal match, then fell to Curtis 3-1 in the third-place contest. Girls soccer: CHS season ends in quarterfinal round The Camas girls soccer team saw its hopes of winning a second consecutive state title come to an end on Saturday, Nov. 12, with a 1-0 loss to Issaquah in a 4A state tournament quarterfinal contest at Doc Harris Stadium. Shelby Runje scored the game's lone goal in the 23rd minute for the Eagles, who lost to the Papermakers in the 2021 4A state championship match. No. 2 seed Camas (17-2-2) had won 15 straight games dating back to mid-September, including the last seven without surrendering a single goal in regulation or overtime. "This particular group of girls we had this year are just phenomenal people. Beyond the soccer-playing aspect, they're just really good humans," Papermakers coach Keri Tomasetti told the Columbian, the Post-Record's sister paper. "Walking away, losing these seniors is sad because they're all just amazing. All the girls are being hit hard right now, just for the idea that they won't be back. We're just going forward and continuing that idea of, 'We can be good soccer players and good humans.' That's what these girls are." Camas opened state tournament play with a 1-0 win over Eastlake Nov. 8, at Doc Harris Stadium. Girls swimming: Camas senior places 2nd twice at state meet Camas senior Campbell Derringer posted a pair of runner-up finishes at the 4A girls swimming and diving state meet on Saturday, Nov. 12, taking second in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke events at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Washington. Deringer was seeded fifth in the 200 IM after the preliminary races, but cut more than three seconds off her time in the final to finish second in 2 minutes, 9.89 seconds behind Woodinville's Maren Rusk. She then posted a time of 1:04.14 in the breaststroke, finishing only behind Issaquah's record-setting Gillian Tue. Camas' Lila McGeachy also earned two medals, finishing fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:59.29) and seventh in the 500 free (5:19.79). Football: Washougal loses 1st-round state game The Washougal football team lost to Highline 30-27 in a 2A state tournament first-round contest at Highline Memorial Stadium in Burien, Washington, on Friday, Nov. 11. The loss ends an historic season for the Panthers (8-2), who won all six of their 2A Greater St. Helens League contests to earn their first league title since 1999. Panthers quarterback Holden Bea threw for 108 yards and one touchdown, and added 74 yards on the ground and another score. Liam Atkin led Washougal's rushing attack, racking up 166 yards and one touchdown on 177 carries. William Cooper returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown, then caught a 3-yard scoring pass in the second quarter for the Panthers. Washougal earned its first state tournament berth since 2019 with a 38-34 win over Shelton in a Week 10 playoff game on Saturday, Nov. 5. Boys golf: Camas, Washougal golfers qualify for state Camas' Eli Huntington shot rounds of 64 and 73 to win the 4A District 1 boys golf championship tournament, held Monday, Oct. 10, and Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Heron Lakes Golf Club in Portland. Three other Papermakers finished in the top five -- Evan Chen (143, second place), Ryan Wang (157), fourth and Drew Scott (161, fifth). Camas won the team title by 61 strokes over second-place Union. The 4A state tournament will be held on Tuesday, May 23, and Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at a yet-to-be-determined location. Four Washougal boys golfers qualified for the 2A state tournament during the 2A District 1 tournament, held Monday, Oct. 24, and Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Orchard Hills Golf Course in Washougal. Mason Acker recorded a two-day score of 156 to finish sixth. Mather Minnis (163), Brayden Kassell (165) and Keagan Payne (167) also finished above the cut line for state tournament qualification. The 2A state tournament will be held May 23-24, 2023, at a not-yet-determined location.
