Student artists needed for Camas event

Student artists are needed for the upcoming “Arts and Letters,” First Friday event in downtown Camas. All middle and high school students are eligible to submit original artwork for the juried event. All entries need to be delivered, with an entry form attached, to The Uncommon Gift, 407 N.E. Fourth Ave., Camas by 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28.

Entry forms are located at www.downtowncamas.com. There will be a limit of 30 pieces of artwork selected for this event. Prizes will be awarded for people’s choice, judge’s choice and honorable mention for middle and high school entries.

All selected artwork will be displayed between 5 and 8 p.m. Friday, March 4 in participating businesses in downtown Camas.

Grass Valley to host student showcase night

Grass Valley Elementary School, 3000 N.W. Grass Valley Drive, will host a showcase night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23 for all Grass Valley students and their families.

The annual event features an open house and musical performance. The spring book fair will also be open in the library throughout the evening. For more details, contact the school at 833-5710.

Fair association offering scholarships

The Clark County Fair Association is offering scholarships for college bound high school students. For more information regarding the criteria or to complete the application, go to www.clarkcofair.com. All applications are due by Saturday, April 30.

For years the Clark County Fair Association, Inc. has given more than $350,000 to students to help pay for college tuition, books and other costs.

To be eligible for a Clark County Fair Association, Inc. scholarship, the applicant must have been actively involved in 4-H, FFA, or Open Class during previous Clark County Fairs.

The awarding of the Clark County Fair Association, Inc. scholarships will be based on the following criteria: Community involvement, fair activity, scholastic ability, future goals and plans, and financial need.

Students accepted to W.A.S. program

Washougal High School students James Maguire, Madeline Down, Samuel O’Hara, David Choi; and their teacher Jason Blaesing have been accepted into the Washington Aerospace Scholars program.

They are among 287 juniors from across the state who were accepted into the program.

Now in its fifth year, W.A.S. is a distance learning program with a NASA-designed curriculum covering the history of space exploration, the space shuttle, the International Space Station, the moon and Mars.

From January through May, the students will complete 10 lessons, which include submitting quizzes, math solutions, essays and graphics concerning these topics every other week. Scholars will independently select a topic of interest for a final project combining an essay with a graphic element.

Up to 160 of the top performing students will be invited to an all-expenses-paid summer residency at The Museum of Flight in Seattle.

Locals earn dean’s list honors

Gabriella Grace Midles and Jordan Alexander Hensley, both of Camas, and Benjamin Lee Dixon of Washougal, have been named to the University of Idaho dean’s list for the fall semester 2010.

To be named to the list, students must earn at least 3.5 GPA and take at least 12 graded credits.

Free screenings for children set

There is a free screening for children aged birth to 21 whose parents reside in the Camas School District boundaries on Wednesday, March 9. The screening tests children in hearing, vision, speech, concepts and motor development. It lasts approximately one hour.

Results are confidential and are discussed with parents only.
