Clark College concerts coming soon

The Clark College band and choir groups will present their fall concerts.

The Chorale and Women’s Choral Ensemble will perform its concert “Gates of Beauty” Sunday, Dec. 9, at 3 p.m., at Faith Baptist Church, 11208 N.E. Hazel Dell Ave.

The Concert Choir and Concert band will perform “Celebration of Joy” Friday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m., at the Royal Durst Theatre at the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics, 3101 Main St., in Vancouver.

Both concerts are free and open to the public.

Funds available to educators to help low-income youth

The Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council is requesting proposals for the delivery of services to in-school and out-of-school, low-income youth age 16 to 21 in Clark, Cowlitz, and Wahkiakum Counties under the Workforce Investment Act Title I.

Total funds available are expected to be approximately $1.3 million.

Actual allocations will not be known until May 2013.

The RFP can be downloaded at www.swwdc.org. Proposals are due Jan. 18, 2013, by 5 p.m.

The goal of the program is to help Southwest Washington youth be prepared for post-secondary success, and to serve as a skilled and qualified pipeline to fill local area workforce demands.

Specifically, successful bidders will work with eligible youth to assist them as necessary in completing their secondary education, developing work readiness and occupational skills, transitioning into post-secondary education and training and/or employment.

Contracts resulting from this RFP are anticipated to begin July 1, 2013 and end June 30, 2014 with an option for renewal for up to three years (through June 30, 2016) without further action.

Washougal schools offering senior citizens free events pass

Washougal residents ages 65 and older can attend various events at Canyon Creek Middle School, Jemtegaard Middle School and Washougal High School for free, with their new “honored guest pass.”

This pass will provide free admission to all school home sports activities as well as WHS performing arts shows.

“We understand this is a time of shrinking budgets, but we also feel that our senior citizens have helped support our community and schools for years and continue to do so,” said Doug Cox, WHS athletic coordinator. “This is a way to honor those contributions.”

Additionally, the district hopes to attract senior citizens who were not attending school events but would enjoy them.

To be issued a pass, qualified residents only need to show their Washington driver’s license or other ID as proof of age and residency to the event cashier at any home high school or middle school sporting event, or WHS performing arts shows.

Passes can also be picked up the Washougal School District office or at the Washougal High School ASB office.

Passes will be available with the kick off of high school winter sports, including men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling seasons and middle school winter sports. Passes are non-transferable and are subject to change.

Winter break camps offered for kids

Camas Parks and Recreation will offer two winter break camps for kids.

During a drama camp, Dec. 17-21, participants will prepare for and perform “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” All children will have a part in the tale working on their lines, sets and celebrating with holiday crafts, games and treats throughout the week.

Children will have informal auditions on Monday, and do not need to prepare anything.

They will be assigned parts at the end of the day and asked to work on their lines at home and find suitable costume items from their closet.

On Friday, children will be dropped off at noon for a dress rehearsal, followed by the performance at 5 p.m.

Cost is $115 for city residents and $125 for out-of -city residents.

The Winter Survival Camp, for ages 8 to 12, will include real survival tips mixed with games and fitness.

Organized by Performance Adventure Wellness Sports, two sessions of the camp (morning and afternoon) will be held at the Scout Hall at Crown Park, Monday through Thursday, Dec. 17-20. Cost is $60 per session.

Cape Horn-Skye names Super Citizens

Cape Horn-Skye Elementary School has announced its Super Citizens for the month of October. The theme was citizenship. They include the following:

Kindergarten: Chris Allen, Perry Wastradowski, David Castrejohn-Hartley, Lela Teeters, Ethan Cole, Liam Cole and Zane Spratt.

First-grade: Hannah Arnold, Chase Burnard, Gabby McCormick, Nikko Speer, Brayden Kassel, Thayden Caine, P.J. Hopmeier-Mitchell and Zach Cannon.

Second-grade: Ines Cruz, Jayden McGath, Shylah Pratt, Thad MacDonald, Kennedie Hunt, Evan Slosser, Joshua Stone, Gage Barrow, Riley Harding, Jordan Kiemele and Makenzi Gehrke.
