Camas student places at SkillsUSA competition

Seth Albert of Camas was the runner-up at the state SkillsUSA competition.

He represented the Clark County Skills Center in architectural drawing. Albert is a Camas High School senior who is enrolled at the Skills Center in the pre-engineering design program.

The Skills Center, owned and operated by 10 Southwest Washington school districts, provides technical and professional training programs to prepare Clark County high school students for the workforce.

Step-Ahead preschool moves to Woodburn Elementary

Camas School District’s Step-Ahead Preschool, open to children ages 3 to 4, is moving from Grass Valley Elementary to Woodburn Elementary. The morning session is from 8:30 to 11 a.m. and the afternoon session is from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Tuition is $230 per month, and pro-rated September through May. The preschool schedule follows the Camas School District calendar.

A registration fee of $25, along with completed paperwork holds a spot in the program.

Space availability is on a first come, first served basis.

Summer program available for incoming kindergartners

Ready, Set, Kindergarten! is a free summer program for students entering kindergarten in September 2013.

Students will be assessed Monday, May 6 through Friday, May 10 to see if they qualify to attend.

Lunch will be provided for those in the program, which runs Monday through Thursday, July 8 to Aug. 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Parents are required to attend three educational classes offered during the program. A student conference is also included.

Wampole selected for Duke University internship

Lauren Wampole of Camas has been selected for a clinical research internship at Duke University in Durham, N.C.

She will work in clinical research under the direction of a cardiologist at Duke University Medical Center.

Wampole, 21, is a 2013 graduate of Washington State University’s College of Pharmacy in Spokane, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and exercise physiology. She intends to sit for her clinical exercise specialist certification through the American College of Sports Medicine before applying to graduate school.

She is the daughter of Ron and Lori Wampole of Camas, and a 2009 graduate of Camas High School.

Excelsior names ‘Phoenix on Fire’

Excelsior High School, Washougal’s alternative school, has instituted a Student of the Month program called “Phoenix on Fire”.

These students exemplify the characteristics staff would like to see in all students.

The qualities are being inspiring, responsible, respectful, having great attendance, an excellent work ethic and a positive attitude.

March’s student of the month is Cayden Gehrke.

Former students invited to board meeting

The Washougal School Board is inviting former students from the past decade to attend its board meeting at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 7, at Washougal High School, 1201 39th St.

Any students who would like to attend are welcome. In addition to hearing from any one who would like to speak, the board will present the results of a recent survey of 130 former Washougal students from as far back as 2000.

This meeting is intended to help the district plan for improvements in high school courses.

Feedback will assist the board in providing resources to programs they identify as valuable.

New student registration opens in Camas

New student registration for preschool through 12th grade is open now.

Registration forms are available online at www.camas.wednet.edu/registration or at the Camas School District Office located at 841 NE 22nd Avenue, Camas.

Registration is by appointment only. District registrars are available Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In addition, evening appointments will be available Monday, May 13, and Tuesday, May 28, until 7 p.m.

WSU Vancouver offers math endorsement

In response to the national call for more and better mathematics teachers, current and future educators are invited to Washington State University Vancouver to learn more about the middle-level math endorsement.

An information session will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 7 in the Dengerink Administration Building, room 129. This event is free and open to the public.

Math Endorsement Information Night will describe the program goals, course requirements, timelines for completion and provide an opportunity for participants to ask questions.

Current teachers who want additional mathematics professional development as well as individuals who wish to be certified to teach math are encouraged to attend.

Callison to graduate May 11

Carissa Callison, a Washougal resident, will graduate magna cum laude from the University of Montana Western on Saturday, May 11.

Callison will earn a bachelor of arts in biology.

Montana Western is located in Dillon, Mont., and offers programs in biology; business; education; English; equine studies; environmental sciences; fine arts; history, philosophy and social sciences; and mathematics.
